Position SummaryThe Department of Fisheries and Wildlife is seeking a new member of the laboratory team for The Water Quality, Environmental, and Molecular Microbiology Laboratory (WQEMM) at Michigan State University. Duties will include but are not limited to field collection of water samples; preparation, processing and testing of collected samples; data management and reporting of results. The ideal candidate will communicate and collaborate with on campus labs to complete projects and act as a MSU liaison for county health departments, EGLE and EPA to provide technical support and trouble shoot problems. Working conditions involving working with potentially hazardous minor inhalation irritants and dry ice. The job requires moderate physical effort, lifting 40 lbs and involves standing and manual dexterity for laboratory work 26-75% of the time.Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills
Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in microbiology or biology or other related field; up to six months of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in basic research techniques in biology or microbiology laboratory or related field; word processing, spreadsheet; database and/or desktop publishing software; presentation software; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Must have some experience with PCR both qPCR and/or digital. Experience with other techniques specific to the area of environmental and/ or molecular biology research, including the use and calibration of related equipment.
Desired Qualifications1 year of lab experience including experience with the following techniques: water filtration, PEG, Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR), Droplet Digital PCR (ddPCR), Quantitative PCR (qPCR), strong organizational skills to be able to manage, coordinate, prioritize multiple tasks and projects; ability to work independently and as a part of a team. A Master’s degree in microbiology; water quality related field.
