Position Summary
The Health Colleges Research Services office provides pre- and post-award grant support for three Health Colleges at Michigan State University: Human Medicine, Osteopathic Medicine, and Nursing, with faculty located throughout the State of Michigan. We offer a supportive and flexible work environment focused on work-life balance, while maintaining a complex workload. We are recruiting an individual to fulfill the role of Research Administrator I within our team.
General job functions will include performing post-award grant functions for health college investigators; serve as fiscal officer on grant accounts; gathers information required in audits and site visits; generates reports; maintains and reconciles the accounting records for grant and contract awards; processes orders for supplies, services and equipment; processes and prepares appropriate documents required for project; provides support to other research administrators, departments, and staff in order to meet project development needs; provides support with miscellaneous unit assignments and special projects and duties as assigned; balances multiple tasks at a time and delivers quality analysis within provided deadlines; prepares and/or supports research administration personnel in developing and compiling reports, metrics and dashboards; updates account lists monthly or when new fund numbers are received. Participation in required training and professional development opportunities in the field of research administration; and other projects as assigned.
Qualified candidates will be highly organized and self-motivated as well as able to balance multiple tasks and deliver quality analysis within sponsor deadlines. Individuals will be expected to build rapport with faculty, departmental staff, and central pre-award, post-award, and compliance offices; have a strong sense of ownership and accountability for their workload; and exercise excellent independent judgment. Work location for the position is flexible. Occasional after normal business hours as well as weekend administrative, education, and training events may be required.

Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills
Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in a business-related field or in a field which corresponds to the particular department of employment; up to six months of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in research administration in one or more of the research process areas of pre- or post-award processes, such as regulatory administration; experience in word processing, spreadsheet and database software; or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience. The job also requires: completion of Essentials of Research Administration (MSU certificate) or equivalent within one year of hire.
Desired Qualifications
Completion of NCURA SPA I & II training; experience in developing proposals for research projects, preferably in an academic environment; extensive experience with Microsoft Access, Excel, Word, and PowerPoint; experience in database management and data/financial analysis; background in science or business course work; a self-starter whose strengths include creative thinking and problem solving, teamwork, and ability to work on several projects simultaneously in a fast paced and stressful deadline-oriented environment; experience in the administration of grants and contracts; experience in interpreting federal agency policies, including those of NIH, NSF, and DOD; knowledge of Research.gov and Grants.gov application processing; knowledge of University policies and procedures.
Three to five years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in office procedures and administration, or in performing responsibilities related to the operational activities of the employing unit; experience in a supervisory role; experience with word processing, database, spreadsheet, presentation software and/or desktop publishing, web page software.
