Position Summary
Michigan State University operates FRIB as a user facility for the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science (DOE-SC), supporting the mission of the DOE-SC Office of Nuclear Physics.
As one of 28 DOE-SC user facilities, FRIB provides researchers with one of the most advanced tools of modern science to study rare isotopes, or short-lived nuclei not normally found on Earth. FRIB hosts what is designed to be the most powerful heavy-ion accelerator, enabling scientists to make discoveries about the properties of rare isotopes, nuclear astrophysics, fundamental interactions, and applications for society, including in medicine, homeland security, and industry.
The establishment of FRIB was funded by the DOE-SC, Michigan State University (MSU), and the State of Michigan, and user facility operation is supported by the DOE-SC Office of Nuclear Physics. Since 2010, MSU’s nuclear physics graduate program is ranked No. 1 in the nation, according to U.S. News and World Report’s rankings of graduate programs.

Purpose:
The NCU systems at FRIB are essential for providing cooling water including off-gas handling, and water treatment for beam-line equipment inside the target hall. The Non-Conventional Utility (NCU) Engineer II will operate water and gas systems to support FRIB programs. In addition, you would trouble shooting and complete failure analysis of these systems, and assist in the design, fabrication, and assembly of technical equipment and support the life cycle from concept, design, fabrication, testing, installation, operation and maintenance of FRIB NCU systems.

Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Physics; three to five years of progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in fabrication techniques, cryogenic systems, electronics, mechanical and electronic drafting and computer systems; and may require experience in the use of CAD and/or related engineering systems, including file transfer; experience in the use of exotic metals, including knowledge of their properties, in the fabrication and assembly of sophisticated research equipment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
