Job Summary:
Archives and Manuscripts Processing Assistants (AMPAs) assist the University Archivist at the Walter Havighurst Special Collections and University Archives located on the third floor of King Library. They will work with the University Archivist and Rare Books and Manuscript Librarian to work with our archives and manuscript collections in their early processing stages.
Please note that new hires will automatically be enrolled in the Libraries’ Student Leadership Academy during their first full year of employment. It focuses on personal leadership and allows you to reflect on your skills, vision, values, and goals. Self-leadership and self-reflection are critical skills to develop to effectively lead others.
Essential Duties:
This position is mainly tasked with the following:
-Retrieving and reshelving materials for researchers or department projects.
-Assisting researchers in locating materials housed in Special Collections and Archives by using the library catalog, ArchivesSpace, and our Digital Collections database.
-Monitoring the use of physical materials in our Reading Room and collecting data related to Reading Room usage.
-Digitizing materials for researchers.
-Answering directional questions about the libraries and campus and referring complex questions that require consultation to librarians.
-Researching contextual and biographical information to enhance archival and manuscript records and finding aids.
-Assisting the University Archivist and Manuscripts Librarian with instruction preparation, and setup and breakdown of the classroom.
-Monitoring participants and materials in classroom instruction sessions.
-Organizing and indexing materials in preparation for their processing
-Updating archival and manuscript records and finding aids.
-Assisting with the preparation, installation, and de-installation of exhibitions.
-Assisting peers working on similar projects and tasks.
-Performing other tasks as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
Strong customer service ethic; excellent attention to detail; a basic understanding of the library system; a basic understanding of Microsoft Office software or Google Drive components; basic computer troubleshooting; excellent communication skills (reading, writing, speaking); ability to multitask and quickly learn. Minimum 10-hour-a-week commitment. Please note that this location is open Monday through Friday between 8 am-5 pm ONLY.
Special Instructions to Applicants:
Past work history in a library or museum focusing on reference or customer service; a basic understanding of how to search for materials in the Libraries’ catalog; the knowledge of how to retrieve materials using Library of Congress call numbers. Students studying History, Museum Studies, IMS, Computer Science, or similar areas or wanting to pursue a career in Library Science are a plus but are not required.
