JOB SUMMARY & PRIMARY JOB FUNCTIONS
REPORTS TO: School Principal
DEPARTMENT NAME: Leadership and Learning
JOB SUMMARY (2-3 sentences): Instructs students individually and in groups using various teaching methods such as lectures, discussions and demonstrations. This position teaches elementary grades.
PRIMARY JOB FUNCTIONS: List, in the order of time spent, the essential tasks performed by the position. Employees may be assigned additional duties by management as required.
Job Responsibility 1:
Plans daily lessons to meet the needs of all students and assists students needing additional support. Adapts teaching methods and instructional materials to meet students’ varying needs and interests.
Job Responsibility 2:
Establishes clear objectives for all lessons, units, projects, and homework assignments. Communicates those objectives to students.
Job Responsibility 3:
Establishes and enforces rules of behavior and procedures for maintaining order in their classroom.
Job Responsibility 4:
Confers with parents or guardians, other teachers, counselors, and administrators to resolve students’ behavioral and academic problems.
Job Responsibility 5:
Designs and implements assessments that measure progress towards academic standards and identifies gaps in learning. Uses assessment data to refine curriculum and adjust instructional practices.
Job Responsibility 6:
Prepares materials and classrooms for class activities and homework assignments. Creates a positive achievement-oriented learning environment.
Job Responsibility 7:
Participates in collaborative curriculum development and grade-level and/or school activities.
Job Responsibility 8:
Participates in ongoing professional development activities.
GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES, REQUIREMENTS, AND IMPACTS

Reads journals and manuals; composes specialized reports and business letters using proper format and grammar; speaks to groups of coworkers and people outside the organization.
COMPLEXITY OF WORK: “Complexity of Work” addresses the analysis, initiative, ingenuity, creativity, and concentration required by the position and the presence of any unusual pressures.
Performs work involving the application of logical principles and thinking to solve practical problems within or applying to a unit or division of the organization; requires continuous, close attention for accurate results and frequent exposure to unusual pressure.
IMPACT OF DECISIONS: “Impact of Decisions” refers to consequences such as damage to property, loss of data or property, exposure of the organization to legal liability, or injury or death to individuals.
Makes decisions with serious impact – affects most units in organization, and may affect citizens.
EQUIPMENT USAGE: “Equipment Usage” refers to inanimate objects such as substances, materials, machines, tools, equipment, work aids, or products. A thing is tangible and has shape, form, and other physical characteristics.
Establishes methods and procedures for acquiring and handling machines, tools, equipment, or work aids involving extensive latitude for judgment regarding attainment of standard or in selecting appropriate items.
SAFETY OF OTHERS: “Safety of Others” refers to the responsibility for other people’s safety, either inherent in the job or to assure the safety of the general public.
Requires considerable responsibility for the safety and health of others and/or continuous enforcement of the laws and standards of public health and safety.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS: “Education Requirements” refers to job specific training and education required for entry into the position.
Bachelors’ degree in education or related degree.
LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, AND REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED: “Licenses, Certifications, and Registrations” refers to professional, state, or federal licenses, certifications, or registrations required to enter the position.
Must have a current Tennessee Teaching certificate or be in an eligible alternative licensure program.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: “Experience Requirements” refers to the amount of work experience that is required for entry into the position that would result in reasonable expectation that the person can perform the tasks required by the position.
Prior teaching experience preferred.

Standing and walking: generally 6 hours per day (full duty)

SENSORY (ADA) REQUIREMENTS: “Sensory Requirements” refers to hearing, sight, touch, taste, and smell necessary to perform the tasks required by the position efficiently.
The position requires normal visual acuity and field of vision, hearing, speaking, color perception, sense of smell, and texture perception.

Responsibilities of Teachers Serving Exceptional Children
Teachers who serve exceptional children are teachers of regular, special classes, resource teachers, itinerant teachers, homebound and hospital teachers, child development specialists, and other teachers with exceptional children in their classrooms. Specific responsibilities of these teachers are
- as follows:
- Participate in the referral and evaluation processes, as appropriate.
- Cooperate and participate in the development of individualized educational programs.
- Coordinate the development of individual instruction plan for each child, including developmental and sequential short-term objectives leading to the achievement of annual goals specified in the IEP.
- Provide appropriate instruction of exceptional students.
- Request support and assistance from specialized resource personnel as necessary to meet the needs of exceptional children.
- Provide consultation assistance to other educational personnel as appropriate.
- Monitor student progress and update individualized educational programs.
- Maintain continuous progress report on student achievement of specified objectives.
- Participate in and conduct periodic reviews of student progress.
- Hold and attend regular parental conferences and conduct home visits to students and their parents, as appropriate.
- Participate in annual placement meeting of exceptional students providing M-Team with summary of student achievement in prior placement.
