About the Position
As a Paralegal within the Appeals, Election Law, Public Records, & Tax Practice Group of the Civil Services Division, your primary focus involves assisting the tax/bankruptcy and election law practices with litigation with case and matter file organization and management, document management, factual research and analysis, and limited legal research. There are also opportunities to assist other Division attorneys, as assigned.
About the Civil Services Division
The Civil Services Division of the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office serves as a law firm that provides legal representation and advice to the Maricopa County government, including its elected officials, departments, and employees. Our work involves defending legal actions, lawsuits, and claims brought against County entities, including Section 1983, tort, election, and tax litigation. We also provide legal advice to County officials on a variety of public law topics. Additionally, we process public records requests for the Maricopa County Attorney. Our division has four practice groups: Litigation; Government Advice & Elected Officials; Human Resources, Behavioral Health, & Probate Group; and Appeals, Election Law, Public Records, & Tax. With this opening, the Civil Services Division is looking to add one Paralegal to its Appeals, Election Law, Public Records, & Tax Practice Group.

We Require
Two years of experience as a paralegal or legal assistant supporting multiple attorneys in a civil practice
Associate’s degree in paralegal studies or legal assistance, or an Associate’s degree in any field with a certificate of completion from a legal assistant or paralegal studies program
Job Contributions
Produce well-written initial drafts of pleadings, motions, briefs, affidavits, memos, discovery requests, and responses, reports and correspondence, as assigned.
Utilize computerized research tools
Assist attorneys with client communications, witness interviews, depositions, civil court rules and proceedings, and trial/hearing preparation, including preparation of witness summaries, organization of exhibits, securing evidence and documentation, deposition abstracts, subpoenas, and witness notifications
Assist attorneys in compiling annotations, indexes and provisions of statutes, cases and administrative decisions
File pleadings, motions, etc., with courts and tribunals as needed.
Review, organize, index and Bates stamps pertinent documents for disclosure/discovery and for use in courts and tribunals
Analyze, organize, review, and verify records and other documents obtained through the discovery process
Assist in updating and maintaining the database/case management system.
Organize and maintain documents in paper and/or electronic filing system.
Perform legal and factual research
Review and edit documents for accuracy
Working Conditions
Office and courtroom settings in high volume, fast-paced environment with frequent stressful situations. May require extended periods of sitting while completing paperwork, standing, and moving about while performing duties
Ability to travel to and from various County locations for court appearances, meetings, and training, using personal or County-owned vehicles
Ability to move up to 20 pounds floor to waist and pushing/pulling up to 20 pounds at a distance of up to 100 feet
Upon completion of a successful 6-month period after hire, employees are eligible to telework up to 16 hours per week with supervisor approval. The ability to telework is dependent upon the employee’s position and business needs
