About The Department and Overview:
The Laurie Hamre Center for Health & Wellness offers campus leadership on health promotion and sexual respect, along with integrated medical and counseling services for all students, through public health and health equity lenses. The Hamre Center serves as a leader and resource for the entire Macalester community’s effort to build a healthy campus. We are dedicated to providing culturally responsive care, support, and resource referrals for all students. Within the Hamre Center, the Health Promotion and Sexual Respect department is dedicated to working within various areas of health and well-being, with particular emphasis on mental health, substance use, and sexual respect. We utilize approaches from public health, higher education, psychology, and sociology, especially the socio-ecological model, to ensure our work goes beyond individual-level knowledge and awareness and supports interpersonal skill development and advocacy for tangible, community-level impacts. We aim to assess, analyze, review, and recommend policies, procedures, and processes to make positive changes at a systemic level: rather than only teaching people how to cope with difficulties, we aim to create a less difficult environment. We are a collaborative and supportive team, dedicated to empowerment, trust, and treating one another as holistic individuals. The Health Promotion and Sexual Respect team works to promote well-being; a broad task, but one we approach with intentionality and passion. This includes an emphasis on both promotion and prevention.
Mission
The mission of the Laurie Hamre Center for Health & Wellness is to promote a healthy community by partnering with students, staff, and faculty to achieve physical, emotional and social well-being while promoting the value of life-long learning and health.
