The Police Officer Trainee is a paid Lehigh University position where the trainee will go through the Allentown Police Academy on a full time basis. Upon successful completion of the Police Academy, the trainee would then receive PA Act 120 certification and become a full-time Police Officer with Lehigh University Police Department. 1. Attend the Allentown Police Academy
* Allentown Police Academy offers the Pennsylvania Municipal Police Officers’ Education and Training Commission (MPOETC) Act 120 Basic Recruit Training Program. This is a 919 hour training program geared for municipal police officers
* Allentown Police Academy training program consists of 20 subject areas. There are academic as well as hands-on training classes. Some of the classes you will have are: Criminal Law, Vehicle Code, Firearms, Defensive Tactics, First Aid, Patrol Procedures and Investigations, plus many more
2. Lehigh University Field Training Program
* Police Officer Trainee field training will include a curriculum based on the most frequent tasks of Officer training, such as report writing, field interrogation, and traffic enforcement
* Police Officer Trainee training will include the use of evaluation techniques designed to measure competency in the required skills, knowledge, and abilities, such as practical exercises, written tests, and field observation
* The trainee will spend the time becoming familiar with employee benefits, General Orders and Department policies, including an overview of Communications Unit, Patrol Unit and Investigations Unit (report writing, arrest procedure, courtroom procedure and observation etc)
3. Position Requirements:
* Must pass a physical performance test and written examination of the Allentown Police Academy
* Must pass a thorough background check and oral examination of both Lehigh University Police Department as well as Allentown Police Academy
* Must pass medical and psychological examinations including drug testing
* Must successfully attend Allentown Police Academy and achieve Act 120 certification upon graduation
