Gator Success Center Specialist

Responsibilities:
The Gator Success Center Specialist provides academic support programs and supplementary educational services that empower students to realize their potential, thus supporting institutional goals regarding retention, persistence, and completion. Core functions involve fostering students’ development of college-ready skills, as well as conducting tutorials that complement and extend classroom instruction. The Gator Success Center Specialist reports to the Director of Library Services and Student Success. Specific duties and responsibilities include, but are not be limited to, the following:
1. Tutor students enrolled in college-prep courses to remove deficiencies and prepare them for success in college-level, credit-bearing courses.
2. Provide one-on-one and small group tutorial sessions for a variety of courses, with emphasis on study strategies, academic reading/writing, science, and mathematics through College Algebra.
3. Provide study resources and direction for students preparing for placement tests (such as TSI), as well as other exams required for program entrance (TEAS, HESI, etc.).
4. Assist individual students in identify their needs in a variety of academic subjects and offer tutoring, appropriate study skills and habits, and other resources to address those needs.
5. Work in conjunction with faculty to provide students with assistance and resources to aid them in completing assignments and meeting course objectives.
6. Maintain a record of all faculty, staff, and students utilizing the Success Center, including the services obtained.
7. Assist students in learning how to use technology relevant to coursework (the Blackboard LMS, Office 365 platform, Microsoft Office suite, etc.).
8. Create instructional materials (such as handouts, slide presentation, etc.) that reinforce concepts and skills taught in tutorials and in the classroom.
9. Research and evaluate various media (books, digital tools, websites, etc.), equipment, and other resources to support student success and effective operation of the Success Center.
10. Coordinate with faculty to coordinate embedded tutoring as needed including, working with course instructors to design specific study curriculum for designated courses..
11. Communicate with the Computer Center regarding upkeep of computer hardware and software in the lab.
12. Assist the Director of Library Services and Student Success in the development and revisions of lab policies, procedures, and programming to keep pace with evolving campus needs.
13. Engage in on-going training, professional development, staff orientation, and staff meetings to not only grow as an educator, but also to continually expand and enhance services offered by the Success Center.
14. Participate in classroom activities to gain firsthand knowledge of what is being taught and/or to offer embedded tutoring services.
15. Act as a liaison between the Gator Success Center and faculty and staff.
16. Perform other duties as may be assigned.
17. Represent and promote the services of the Gator Success Center at campus and community events.
18. Serve on committees as requested.
19. Works a minimum of one evening a week and some Saturdays as needed.
Qualifications:
Associate degree required. Bachelor’s degree preferred in an appropriate area (education, mathematics, English, natural sciences, etc.) or an equivalent combination education and experience.
Ability to interact cooperatively and productively with staff, faculty, students, and the public. Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills. Excellent oral and written communication, with knowledge of standard, academic English. Strong math/basic algebra skills, with ability and willingness to learn additional math topics. Good organizational skills. Comfortable using computers and adept at most common technology functions (email, Internet search, working with electronic files and folders, online databases, etc.). Willingness to learn and follow safety procedures and comply with established college policies and regulations.
Requires constant movement and observation; operating computers and audiovisual equipment, as well as various other instructional and office machines.
This position is security-sensitive and thereby subject to the provisions of the Texas Education Code §51.220
Normal computer laboratory environment. Some evening and Saturday hours required.
