Knox has had a McNair Scholars Program since
1992. The program identifies and assists individuals from disadvantaged and under-represented backgrounds who have the potential to succeed
in graduate studies (with an emphasis on doctoral studies). The McNair Scholars Program requires participants to complete rigorous research,
begin graduate studies the fall immediately following their bachelor’s degree, persist in graduate studies locally and across the nation,
and complete a doctoral degree within ten years of bachelor’s graduation. Knox students identified as McNair Scholars are high-achieving and
successful, with excellent post-graduate opportunities.
As the primary student-facing position, the associate director will provide
direct support to McNair scholars enrolled at Knox College and support the executive director in executing all aspects of the funded
proposal.
Key Responsibilities:
1. provides academic planning and guidance for program participants;
2. co-teaches
all McNair seminar courses;
3. assists a diverse pool of participants in graduate school preparation and application;
4.
develops and implements educational programming for current and prospective participants
5. manages student employees; and 6.
assists the executive director in meeting legislative requirements in program documentation, reporting, and project
management.

Minimum Experience Required:
The Associate Director must have at least one year of experience working with
first-generation, low-income, and underrepresented students and have excellent cross-cultural communication skills.

Additional Qualifications: (Preferred qualifications)
A degree in a science,
technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) field is preferred.
Recommended qualifications include at least one year of
experience in academic counseling, teaching, or related field; programmatic experience in planning and implementing cultural and educational
workshops and events; and organizational and technical aptitudes for data management and evaluation.
The Director also must
demonstrate competence in supervising and instructing students in undergraduate research activities, and in analyzing and evaluating the
quality of undergraduate research. Collaboration with faculty and other offices across campus are key. Most importantly, the Director must
show demonstrated success in working with low-income, first-generation, and other underrepresented students to attain their degrees and
pursue post-graduate studies. Preferred qualifications include: experience in working with STEM students/disciplines; knowledge of research
processes (qualitative, quantitative, statistics, and citation); knowledge of and expertise in TRIO programs; and demonstrated success in
using technology to advance the program’s goals.
