Visiting Assistant Professor in Experimental Video and Digital Media
Kenyon College, a highly selective, nationally-ranked liberal arts college in central Ohio, invites applications for a one-year position in Studio Art at the rank of Visiting Assistant Professor beginning July 2024.
The Studio Art Department is seeking a visual artist with an experimental practice that critically engages with video and installation practices, new media and emerging technologies, and with demonstrated expertise in digital image manipulation and knowledge of physical computing or creative coding processes. Candidates may also have valued expertise in other areas of data-driven arts such as interactivity, real-time and generative imaging, and VR.
Applicants should be practicing artists who are exhibiting their work nationally and/or internationally and are committed to developing and maintaining an ongoing professional artistic career. They must hold an MFA degree and demonstrate strong teaching skills, with teaching experience at the college level expected.
A knowledge of contemporary issues in media arts and art history, and the ability to communicate the relevance of art in all areas of society and within a liberal arts environment is an essential part of this position. Courses will incorporate a variety of digital media techniques and theories, as well as analog production methods and materials as necessary, and include challenging conceptual content that responds to and creates new frameworks for current visual culture and a socially-engaged awareness in such fields of inquiry as artificial intelligence, globalization, sustainability, and complex and intersecting gender, racial, cultural, socioeconomic, and political identities.
The successful candidate will be able to teach a variety of processes, including but not limited to experimental video practices, interactive and technology-driven experiences, and new media history. The Studio Art Department supports assignments that utilize interdisciplinary strategies. Knowledge of video and new media technologies and software is essential, including Adobe Suite, Arduino, and emerging technologies, with advanced proficiency in both production and post-production workflows. They will contribute to the curriculum which offers introductory, intermediate, and advanced courses as well as individual project development, critical thinking, and experimentation.
Responsibilities include teaching five courses on all levels including one cross-media advanced seminar. Additional responsibilities include supervision and maintenance of the digital lab and equipment and purchasing supplies. Faculty Development support is available to assist with pedagogical and artistic projects. In addition to teaching, visiting full-time faculty participate in the Kenyon community through ongoing curricular development, departmental meetings and events.
