Primary responsibility is for the retention and completion of students. The Navigator is held accountable for the achievement of student retention and completion goals. The Student Success Navigator will provide direct services to students in support of the College’s TCS2 (Total Commitment to Student Success) efforts to increase student persistence, retention, certificate/degree completion and successful transfer. This person will operate in a case management student services role focused on retention management, outreach, and intervention. Routine occasions where this position will be required to work more than a 40-hour week. This position also supports the Corrections Education Program (CEP); therefore, this position may be required to travel with regional directors to the correctional facilities to assist with student needs. Additionally, the School Certifying Official serves as the institution’s liaison to the Veteran’s Administration. The SCO is responsible for processing and managing Veteran’s Education benefit paperwork in accordance with Federal and State guidelines. This includes but is not limited to document and eligibility verification. Additionally, the SCO is responsible for maintaining current knowledge of all Veterans Education benefits, information included in the SCO Handbook, as well as the regulations of the Department of Veteran Affairs and institutional policies.
Essential Functions
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
a. Accountable for individual caseload outreach, retention, intervention, and student completion.
b. Achieve individual student caseload retention and completion goals as established by the college.
c. Assist with the planning and implementation of all retention related events.
d. Management of tracking dashboard to retain and recruit back students who have dropped out from the college in accordance with the set deadlines of the outreach and intervention plan.
e. Attend conferences and meetings to stay current on industry trends and best practices.
f. Meet accountability measures for frequency and type of student contacts through face-to-face appointments, virtual appointments, phone calls, email, texting, classroom visits, and campus events (including in the community).
g. Address early alert retention needs for students as identified by faculty members.
h. Create individualized Academic Recovery plans for at risk students with the intention to return the student to good academic standing.
i. Review student degree audits and create long term education plans for student completion .
j. Provide complete orientation to students regarding the breadth and depth of services available to assist a student (e.g. hunger free campus, oasis center, OER materials, health clinic, free tutoring)
k. Assist students in completing a student success completion contract that details the student’s goals, timelines, and accountability measures which will be reviewed with the student multiple times a semester. Relatedly, guide students to develop personal accountability for their decisions and an understanding of how those decisions impact their success.
l. Maintain current knowledge of academic and occupational degree requirements, graduation requirements, transfer requirements and pre-requisite requirements to advise students toward completion.
m. Arrange for a handoff (physically if possible) between a student and peer tutor in Center for Student Success
n. As assigned, serve as a liaison with JC’s occupational and academic departments. Attend departmental and advisory meetings to remain current on program offerings, career/occupational outlook and other departmental information. Relay pertinent information back to Student Services as appropriate.
o. Plan and organize events and workshops tailored to the needs and interests of students within assigned caseload. Creating cohorts of 10-15 students,
p. With supervisor approval, serve on internal committees designed to improve Institutional quality and serve as a College representative for various community committees and associations.
q. Maintain accurate records (including electronic records) of interactions with students. Routinely report statistics designed to measure departmental progress
r. Understand the institutions interpretation of FERPA rules for the release of student information.
s. Travel as needed to correctional facilities to support CEP program; as such will need to pass a LEIN (Law Enforcement Information Network) clearance.
t. Responsible for understanding, supporting and actively demonstrating the College’s beliefs, values, mission and vision and being in agreement to be evaluated by same.
u. Responsible for understanding that this position has been identified as a Campus Security Authority (CSA) position. You must complete the annual Clery Act training, for and act as, a Campus Security Authority

w. Keeps the State Approving Agency (SAA) informed of:
1. New programs and changes in current programs
2. Changes in academic policies and procedures
3. Changes of address, phone numbers and certifying officials
4. Additional information required by the SAA
x. Ensures that the school is adhering to the rules and regulations as contained in the VA School Certifying Official Handbook
y. Use and maintain knowledge of appropriate VA reporting tools (VAOnce)
z. Acts as the primary liaison for the institution with the VA and the SAA.
aa. Ensures campus administration is apprised of all pertinent information that may affect the institution, service to VA students, or compliance status of the school.
bb. Performs monthly audit reviews to ensure accuracy of reported activities, such as non-pursuit and last date of attendance reporting to the VA
cc. Monitor the compliance of VA rule 21.4201(85/15% rule)
dd. Responsible for maintaining VA records and making records available for internal and external inspection
ee. Retain all VA paperwork in a secure area
ff. Maintain records for at least three years following the student’s last date of attendance.
gg. Provide prospective and current students with assistance and guidance to successfully finance their education using their VA education benefits
hh. Keep current on all VA rules and benefits and appropriately communicated them with institutional officials
ii. Acts as a liaison between the department of Veterans Affairs and other military entities and the student; researches and resolves problems with claims, billings, nonpayment, etc. in a timely and accurate manner.
jj. Maintains virtual file of records and communication with student.
kk. Ensures that the benefit programs are administered effectively, efficiently, and in accordance with Jackson College’s policies as well as legal regulations.
ll. Establishes and maintains professional relations with military contacts.
mm. Provide e-mail address to VA Education Liaison Representative (ELR) to be included on list serve.
nn. Read and maintain VA bulletins on the VA website
oo. Participate in VA and SAA professional development and disseminate information from trainings appropriately.
pp. Works with staff, faculty and administrators to promote and implement VA student retention and success efforts.
qq. Promotes and supports the campus-based Veterans Resource Center.
rr. Works collaboratively with the Veterans Resource Representative and Financial Aid Office.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
This position may coordinate the peer advising mentors and student workers.
CONTACTS AND PURPOSE OF CONTACTS
Internal: Frequent contact with registration/records, admissions, financial aid, business office, multicultural affairs, student life, student housing, institutional quality and effectiveness, information technology and academic department staff in information sharing/gathering and problem-solving capacity. Regular contact and collaborative work with other staff, faculty, and administration members.
External: Frequent contact with students, prospective students and general public. Regular contact with JC off campus staff and community partners. Some contact may be required with state and federal agencies.
Minimum Qualifications
MinimumEducation and/or Experience: Bachelor’s degree (B.A. or B.S.) from four-year college or university in a related field. Valid Michigan Driver’s license.
