Illinois Wesleyan University seeks a full-time Sponsored Research Officer (SRO) to begin early 2024. Reporting to the Provost, the SRO will anchor university-wide efforts to maximize its external funding resources in alignment with university priorities. The SRO will be involved in pre-award, post-award, and all related activities related to grant seeking and award management, including but not limited to:
Prospecting for funding opportunities to support both individual research projects as well as broader, departmental/divisional/institutional initiatives
Working closely with administrators, faculty, and staff to maintain focus and forward momentum in the proposal development and writing process to meet submission deadlines
Collaborating with principal investigators/program directors (PIs/PDs) to build budgets that are compliant with funder and institutional policies and guidelines
Supporting proposal development by securing institutional data needed to support the application
Working with principal investigators and program directors to ensure compliance with external guidelines and regulations
The SRO will participate as an ex officio member of the Research Advisory Committee and the Faculty Development Committee. In addition, the SRO will provide insights on appropriate programming in the Thorpe Center for Faculty Development to advance a grant-seeking culture among our faculty.
The strongest applications will meet the following expectations:
A Bachelor’s degree (Master’s degree preferred)
3-4 years of experience working in an office of sponsored programs
Experience with proposal writing and grant administration required
Strong experience interacting (pre-award, submission, and post-award) with federal and private funders such as NSF, NIH, DoEd, NEH, NEA, HHMI, etc.
Demonstrated experience in ensuring post-award compliance for project outcomes and budget expenditures
Strong written and oral communication skills
High proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Google platform software (experience with Banner preferred)
Familiarity with non-profit and fund accounting, FASB, GAAP, government grants, external audits, and single audit experience
Certifications as a Certified Research Administrator (CRA) or Certified Financial Research Administrator or similar are preferred
Demonstrated ability to prioritize and manage multiple grant-seeking efforts simultaneously

This is a full-time, 12 month, on-campus position. Generous benefits include health, retirement, considerable time off and access to multiple tuition programs for employees and dependents. The final candidate will pass a pre-employment background investigation.
Salary $54-$64k, based on experience
