The Chair is responsible for guiding the School of Physical Therapy’s faculty and staff, developing and monitoring the curriculum and pertinent academic policies, and overall administration of the Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) program. The Chair will ensure continued accreditation by the Commission on Accreditation for Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE) by working with faculty/staff/students, along with the Office of Assessment and Accreditation in maintaining compliance with policies, procedures, and criteria established not only by CAPTE but other professional physical therapy associations (APTA, ACAPT, FSBPT, etc.). Responsibilities also include teaching in areas of expertise, scholarship, advising, community involvement and service.
Examples of Duties
Administrative: The Chair will participate in University governance, effectively manage and promote the development of personnel and fiscal resources, and work with University administration in maintaining a premier DPT. The Chair will monitor and manage all information and data necessary to annually assess the DPT program, its students, faculty and staff. Evaluative and assessment data will be collected and used to verify success and to ensure compliance with CAPTE criteria. Administrative duties include but are not limited to developing and proposing budgets, reviewing and revising the DPT curriculum, reviewing and revising policies and resources to support student outcomes, and writing annual departmental progress reports. The Chair will work collectively with the University’s Office of Accreditation and Assessment to manage accreditation and ensure program outcomes and goals are met annually.
Teaching: The Chair will assume primary responsibility for teaching 12 – 14 credits/year (may be adjusted by Dean as needed). Teaching excellence is expected and evidenced by attention to instructional design, teaching pedagogies and performance evaluations. Teaching and student outcomes should be consistent with norms and expectations set by the profession.
Scholarship and Professional Activity: The Chair is expected to maintain currency within his/her professional area of expertise and to participate in scholarly activities as defined by the Faculty Handbook and CAPTE. Up to one day per work week may be negotiated for professional consultation, research, or clinical practice. The Chair is also responsible for developing and executing a scholarship plan that contributes to the peer-reviewed scientific or professional body of knowledge relevant to his/her area of expertise. On a professional level, the Chair actively engages in the American Council of Academic Physical Therapy (ACAPT) and/or the APTA’s Academy of Physical Therapy Education in order to ensure that the DPT program maintains currency in physical therapy education and physical therapy practice.
Service: The Chair is expected to facilitate and participate in School, College, and University meetings, retreats, committees, and activities (open house, PT class meetings, and/or student recruitment projects) as well as serve on Faculty Forum and/or Institutional committees. Responsibilities also include active engagement in University governance.
Academic Advising: The Chair is responsible for leading recruitment and retention strategies, and will advise potential applicants and those students who are in academic jeopardy according to progression and dismissal policies. The Chair provides information and advice for professional career pathway development, including the completion of forms and letters of recommendation needed for graduate licensure and employment. The Chair will maintain office hours and advise PT students each year following the policies and procedures documented in the Husson Faculty Advising Manual.

Education: Earned Academic Doctorate (PhD, EdD, DSc)
Maine license eligibility and American Physical Therapy Association membership
Experience: Minimum of six years of higher education experience with three of those years in a physical Therapy program. Minimum of three years of administrative experience.
Eligible for senior faculty status with the qualifications to hold the faculty rank
of Associate Professor or higher per established set Faculty Handbook criteria.
Associate Professors:
1. In the relevant area of teaching, possession of:
a. An appropriate terminal or professional degree; or
b. A non-research based doctorate degree with substantial teaching experience
2. Teaching excellence;
3. Mastery of pedagogical skills and dedication to continuing improvement of pedagogical skills;
4. A minimum of six (6) years of full time teaching experience in rank at the time of appointment to Associate Professor.
Professor:
1. In the relevant area of teaching, possession of an appropriate terminal or professional degree;
2. Teaching excellence;
3. Mastery of pedagogical skills and dedication to continuing improvement of pedagogical skills;
4. A minimum of twelve (12) years of full time teaching experience in rank at the time of appointment to Professor;
5. Substantial scholarly contribution to the discipline or field of expertise through refereed articles; authored textbooks or books; presentation at conferences; or other evidence.
Special Skills: Record of scholarship, demonstrated excellence in teaching, excellent communication skills, knowledge of issues in higher education, and an in-depth understanding of contemporary physical therapy practice.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience: Five years of clinical experience
Special Skills: Record of grantsmanship, fund-raising, community partnering, and interprofessional experience, collegial and cooperative leadership style
