Founded in 1953, Hudson Valley Community College (HVCC) located in scenic Upstate NY is a multi-campus College with locations in Troy and Malta New York. HVCC offers more than 80 degree and certificate programs in three schools: Business and Liberal Arts; Health Sciences; and Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM). Veteran Peer Mentor
Veteran Resource & Outreach Center (VETROC) A Joseph

Minimum Qualifications for Employment:
Minimum two years’ experience as a Non-Commissioned Officer in the United States military
Completion of a Non-Commissioned Officer Leadership Course, such as Basic Non-Commissioned Officer Leader Course (BNCOC)
Awarded a Good Conduct Medal or equivalent;
Served in a administrative management role at or above pay grade;
Demonstrated exceptional leadership, team building, and mission planning skills in an operational environment;
Working knowledge of the Veteran Affairs resources and benefits;
Excellent communication and presentation skills;
Strong understanding of the GI Bill’s application to higher education is preferred;
Certified in Mental Health First Aid or ability to complete training be end of the semester;
Knowledge of data analytics to assist in tracking and evaluating the success of veteran peer support programs;
Must be a current student pursuing a Bachelor degree and enrolled in a college program at least ¾ time.
The Veteran Peer Mentor reports to the Assistant Director of the Veteran Resource and Outreach Center (VETROC) and performs the following duties:
Conducts outreach to, and serves various groups (e.g., combat veterans, female veterans) with a focus on both small and large student cohorts;
Maintains relationships with various campus offices to offer support and encourage referrals to veteran students;
Builds and maintains connections and partnerships with the surrounding county Dwyer programs and services to better serve the veteran population within Rensselaer County and surrounding areas;
Supports veteran students in developing an academic and personal connection to HVCC and the community through on-campus events and workshops, as well as off-campus events and recreation;
Assists in organizing, developing, and facilitating 1-on-1 and group peer support
sessions;
Partners with the Admissions staff to represent HVCC Veterans at on and off-campus
recruitment events;
Assists in the development of student support programming designed to foster veteran student persistence and retention;
Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned
This is a part-time, semester-based, grant-funded position with an hourly rate of $20. Work
schedule will not exceed 18 hours per week. The grant for this position is from 9/1-8/31.
