General Responsibilities
The Assistant Director’s function is to provide leadership for the office of Disability Support Services in concert with the Director and to assist in ensuring programmatic and physical accessibility for students with disabilities. This position works closely with faculty and staff to ensure that students with disabilities are appropriately accommodated in all aspects of the college experience. This position works closely with students to provide academic advising and determine reasonable accommodations based on their disability documentation. The Assistant Director must be able to multi-task in a fast-paced environment as the DSS Office serves over 900 students with disabilities each semester with the equivalent of three full-time counselors.

The Assistant Director directly supervises the Assistive Technology/Accommodated Testing Specialist, the Accommodated Testing Assistant, the Assistive Technology Assistant, 10 reader/writer/note taker/proctors and up to two work-study students. This person is responsible for strategic planning, budget development, hiring, training, and evaluating staff within this subset of DSS- Assistive Technology and Individualized Proctoring Services.
The Assistant Director will assist the Director in developing and implementing policies and procedures that address the needs and concerns of students with disabilities. The Assistant Director must have specialized working knowledge of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Sections 504 and 508 of the Rehabilitation Act and may serve as a consultant to ensure campus compliance with these federal laws.
Work Performed
  • Coordinates and oversees operations for Disability Support Services in collaboration with the Director.
  • Supervises the Assistive Technology/Accommodated Testing Specialist, the Accommodated Testing Assistant, the Assistive Technology. Assistant, 10 reader/writer/note taker/proctors and up to two work-study students.
  • Supervises the timely production of alternative format materials as well as the instruction on assistive technology for students with disabilities.
  • Supervises the purchase and maintenance of all technology and equipment for the assistive technology lab.
  • Oversees changes to data management systems within Disability Support Services and develops internal procedural adjustments in concert with such changes.
  • Supervises all professional and hourly staff in the absence of the Director.
  • Serves as a member on the college’s core behavioral intervention team, ASSIST, as well as on other college-wide committees as assigned.
  • Conducts intake interviews, assesses psychometric and psychological documentation to determine eligibility and determines reasonable accommodations based on the student’s needs, disability, and relevant laws (ADA/504).
  • Facilitates the process of communicating student accommodations to faculty.
  • Documents student interactions and maintains confidential files.
  • Provides academic counseling based on a thorough knowledge of the college’s career and transfer programs and courses as well as the students’ unique learning styles.
  • Assists students with course selection, priority registration, and long-term planning.
  • Guides students in self advocacy to help develop necessary skills in academic and professional careers.
  • Refers students in need of crisis/personal counseling to appropriate internal and external resources, and collaborates directly with other providers across campus to maximize the student’s success.
  • Assists and advises faculty on how to provide reasonable accommodations and accessible instruction to students with disabilities.
  • Collaborates with other professionals to coordinate students’ assistive technology and testing needs.
  • Works cooperatively with Completion Services to monitor academic progress and provide necessary intervention to ensure retention and student success.
  • Serves as a liaison for students with various outside agencies such as the Department of Rehabilitation Services and area high schools.
  • May interact on an occasional basis with students’ family members explaining and clarifying college policies and procedures.
  • Collaborates with and refers students as needed to other campus resources such as tutoring, counseling, career services, completion services, financial aid, registration, Veteran’s Affairs, etc.
  • Serves as a representative of the DSS office on various panels and makes presentations both on and off campus as needed.
  • Responsible for identifying, developing, and revising DSS policies and procedures for the Director’s implementation.
  • Prepares all departmental reporting requirements for the Director.
  • Interfaces with administration, faculty, staff, and students on matters relating to disability and access.
  • Works with DSS staff and campus partners in the planning and presenting of disability awareness activities and other campus outreach.
  • Prepares and conducts workshops and presentations on disability related topics as requested.
  • Attends meetings and holds membership in professional associations such as AHEAD and its local chapter – MD AHEAD.
Minimum Education Required Master’s degree

Other Knowledge Required
  • Master’s degree in Counseling, Psychology, Special Education, or related field.
  • Three years college advising, student advocacy, or counseling experience.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of laws protecting persons with disabilities such as the Americans with Disabilities Act and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act.
  • Three years of experience assessing students’ documentation of disability and prescribing accommodations, preferably at the college level.
  • Experience providing advocacy and counseling to persons with disabilities, preferably at the college level.
  • Ability to establish working relationships with local human services agencies.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft applications including Word, Excel, and Access
  • Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written skills; ability to work with a team.
  • Regular attendance is a requirement of this job.
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality.
  • Must be willing to learn and use new and emerging software or technology tools to streamline office processes and procedures.

Fast paced, busy environment. Ability to deal with potential crisis situations for a diverse group of students. Frequent high stress conditions. May include occassional evening and weekend hours as needed or for special events
