Position and Qualifications
The Environmental Studies program is anchored by an actively engaged faculty from an array of academic disciplines that support students interested in obtaining degrees in Environmental Science (B.S.) or Environmental Studies (B.A.). Experiential learning is highly valued and is infused into the curriculum through internships, multiple affiliated study-away opportunities, a travel/research course in Ecuador, the active engagement of undergraduates in research during the academic year and summer, and other hands-on learning experiences.
We seek a broadly trained individual with expertise in environmental studies who possesses a strong interest in teaching innovation and continued scholarly/creative work in the field within a liberal arts institution. We welcome applicants with a Ph.D., J.D., or other related advanced degree, as well as those with expected degree completion by June 30, 2024, in areas focused on environmental studies, including, but not limited to, sustainability systems, food/agriculture, or environmental law or policy.
The position carries a teaching load of six courses per year. Applicants must be able to teach an introductory course in environmental studies, as well as two other required ES courses (one in political ecology and the other in an ES methods/research design course). In addition, the successful candidate will be able to offer upper-level ES courses in their area of interest (e.g., environmental justice, sustainability systems, food and agriculture, environmental law, etc.). Other duties include engaging students in research and supervising student theses/capstone projects, advising students, participating in department and university-wide governance, and contributing to the general education program.
Candidates are sought who will advance Hollins’ commitment to diversity, equity, justice, and inclusive excellence; who have demonstrated success working with and mentoring students who are first-generation, limited-income, and from historically underrepresented groups in higher education; and who have an active record of ongoing scholarly activity in the form of publications, presentations, and/or creative work.
