Hiram College invites applications for the position of Director of Career and Academic Development. Hiram College is a private liberal arts institution located in northeast Ohio. This position is a 12-month professional staff position.

The Director of Career and Academic Development is responsible for the leadership and delivery of all career and career-related programs and services as well as leadership of academic development services to students. The Director provides services for traditional students, partnership students, online students, weekend college students, and alumni. The Director reports to the Vice President and Dean of Student Affairs and is expected to keep the Vice President fully appraised of activities and progress within the career and academic development portfolio.
The Director will hold one-on-one meetings with students regarding an array of career development topics such as career and major exploration, part-time and full-time job search, graduate school search and applications, salary negotiations, interviewing techniques, resume reviews, cover letter writing, and more. The Director will also be responsible for organizing, hosting, and marketing events to students; these events include, but are not limited to, school networking events, etiquette event, resume workshop, career fair, Countdown to Graduation, NOTED, and mock interviews. Other workshops are requested by students, staff, and faculty regularly, including classroom presentations.
The Director will create and maintain relationships with a broad base of local and national employers to create and identify internship and job opportunities for students. The Director will maintain the Hiram College Handshake account: overseeing the creation of guidelines, ensuring guidelines are followed, overall job postings, marketing to students and increasing usage, and marketing it to campus and employers.
The Director will provide leadership and direct supervision to two full-time staff members, the Assistant Director of Academic Development, and the Coordinator for Career Development. The Director will also be responsible for providing leadership to a Graduate Assistant of Career and Academic Development, student workers, and interns. The Assistant Director of Academic Development oversees tutoring programs and works with the academic probation students; the Coordinator for Career Development oversees internships, Hiram Connect internships, and internship funding. The Director will also provide leadership to the Hiram Connect committee, which mostly focuses on the experiential learning requirement for students.
The Director will be responsible for several programs and initiatives including, but not limited to, Connecting to Career, annual assessment, teaching Student Development courses, The Washington Center, and the First Destination Survey. The Director will oversee creation and distribution of the First Destination Survey and will put together the annual report and distribute that information to campus and others.
The Director manages several budgets including the Career Development budget and approximately five budgets that provide funding to students for unpaid internships. The Director works closely with the Office of Alumni and Development to secure donations and to distribute the funds appropriately. Assisting with grant writing and reporting is also a common task.
The successful candidate will have a Master’s Degree in higher education or a related field, as well as 5+ years of experience in student services, career development, recruiting, advising, or related field. The successful candidate will also have demonstrated ability to relate to students, an understanding of career development theories and approaches, skill at engaging and cultivating relationships with employers/faculty/staff/alumni, and ability to build an innovative, data-confirmed program that results in tangible student outcomes. Preference will be given to candidates with prior hands-on leadership and supervision experience.
