Position Description
The Co-Director of DC-Engage: The goal of DC-engage is to promote awareness and two-way dialog regarding genetics and genetic technologies and their application to a broad range of issues, such as medicine and climate change. The Co-Director will work in Washington DC to engage members of our Nation’s leadership at the federal and state levels. The co-director will facilitate engagement in various environments, from one-on-on-one discussions and small seminars, to providing congressional briefings and leading workshops.
This Co-director will support the goal of DC-engage across the broader DC community, with an emphasis on equity across all socioeconomic, educational, ethnic, racial, and religious backgrounds. The Co-director will be responsible for obtaining support via fundraising and team-building efforts. The position will require organizing and conducting meetings and presentations, attending meetings and functions in the broader DC community, limited travel when necessary, training and mentoring new employees, students, interns, etc; and identifying and organizing fundraising opportunities. Whether these projects are conducted in-person or remotely is not as critical as their effectiveness.

The long-term goals of the project will be to promote a foundational knowledge of genetics and genetic technologies at the level of the federal and state governments such that informed conversations about genetic information and genetic technologies can become commonplace among members of the nation’s leadership. In this way, the project aims to facilitate informed discussion and debate regarding the use of genetic information and genetic technologies for addressing medical, educational, economic, societal, and environmental challenges. Above all, the project aims to be informational and, thus, will not be engaging in lobbying.
Sources of funding will likely include grants from charitable organizations and federal institutions, such as the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation, as well as philanthropic donations and donations from industry.
This is a one-year term position from the date of hire, with the possibility of extension, contingent upon work performance and continued funding to support the position.
This position is based in Boston, but the work may be done primarily remote. Any remote work must be performed in a state in which Harvard is registered to do business (CA*, CT, GA, IL, MA, MD, ME, NH, NJ, NY, RI, VA, VT, and WA). Individual flexible and remote work options for this role will be discussed during the interview process. *Note: Harvard employees working in California must be exempt.
