Responsibilities

The Controller’s Office offers career ladders for many of our positions which allow tenured employees promotional opportunities within their job. The successful candidate will be hired at the most appropriate level of Payroll Tax Specialist level I through IV, based on education and experience.

This position is responsible for performing professional tax work with a focus on accurate tax classification for both U.S. and nonresident alien employees and students, year-end tax reporting and distribution of annual employee tax forms.

• With guidance, assists with reviewing and analyzing tax reports during bi-weekly payroll processing, applying basic knowledge to ensure proper taxation of all payments.

• Responsible for the collection of immigration and tax documents required for nonresident alien employees and students and, with guidance, applies basic knowledge to ensure compliance with university policy and federal laws.

• Provides counsel to both nonresident alien and U.S. employees regarding basic tax questions.

• Serves as a team member for the year end payroll processes related to tax and producing and distributing the annual W-2 tax forms.

• Reviews departmental payment requests to identify nonresident alien students and determines the tax classification for each individual student.

• Responsible for the collection/review/processing of fringe benefits to tax employees on the value of non-cash fringes.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in accounting, human resources, or similar field, or a high school diploma or equivalent and experience equal to four years. (Note: post high-school education and/or experience may substitute at a comparable rate.)

• Ability to demonstrate effective customer service skills.
• Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
• Ability to perform accurately in a detail-oriented environment.
• Ability to prioritize, organize and perform multiple work assignments simultaneously.
• Knowledge of principles, practices & standards of payroll administration in assigned area.
• Ability to utilize problem solving skills.
• Experience with Excel.

Candidates with a Bachelor’s degree and additional years of related experience may be considered for Payroll Tax Specialist roles level II-IV. Each level requires and two years of experience.

Preferred Qualifications

• Peoplesoft experience
• Experience working with nonresident alien payroll taxation.

Anticipated Salary Range

Anticipated starting salary $44,710, commensurate with education and experience.
