Responsibilities
Responsible for managing Tree Crew and Pruning Crew teams to maintain the trees and woody plants for the university. Ensures trees and woody plants maintain healthy, safe, and attractive conditions which may include chemical applications, repairing, cabling, fertilizing, watering, pruning, and removal of any dead, diseased or declining trees, or other woody plants.
Makes inspections of the health and maintenance needs of campus trees and shrubs. Provides guidance for the pruning crew supervisor and tree crew supervisor. Provides on the job training for the aboriculture team. Inspects work performed by members of the work unit. Evaluates employee performance and counsels employees as needed regarding job performance. Approves leave requests and certifies time worked for members of the work unit. Participates in daily work in both units.
Ensures a safe, clean, sustainable, and attractive landscaped environment for the students, faculty, and staff of our institution. Determines which projects should be performed by outside contractors and coordinates that work. Acquires necessary quotes for services from vendor. Coordinates necessary crane work, road closures, traffic control and assistance from FSU Police and the City of Tallahassee Police and Utilities.
Coordinates necessary maintenance of all equipment, supplies and vehicles with the Grounds Mechanic Shop. Initiates purchasing work orders for materials and supplies. Supports areas within Grounds and other assigned special projects as needed including the use of heavy equipment to move boulders, benches, gates, statues and other heavy objects.
Responsible for overseeing the maintenance of the campus tree inventory by taking field measurements and updating the GIS database with the assistance of the Campus Landscape Inspector. Acts as a liaison between the Arboriculture team and internal and external customers. Maintains written and photographic records of work performed.
Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalency and four years experience or a combination of post high school education and experience equal to four years.
Knowledge of landscaping and groundskeeping techniques.
Knowledge of the practices and the ability to perform underground lawn sprinkler repair and installation techniques, and the design and redesign of irrigation systems.
Ability to perform groundskeeping work to include the transplanting, cultivation, pruning, and trimming of plants, shrubs, and trees.
Knowledge of applicable computer applications and basic computer functions.
Knowledge of and ability to identify safety hazards and necessary safety precautions to establish a safe work environment.
Knowledge of and ability to safely operate machinery, tools, equipment and materials used in area of work.
Ability to prepare and monitor budget information.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
Ability to effectively train and direct the work of others.
Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
Ability to meet the physical demands of this position including stooping, bending, reaching, digging, and lifting/moving up to 50 lbs.
A valid State of Florida or Georgia driver’s license, or the ability to obtain upon hire.
Class B/CDL required within 6 months of hire.
Preferred Qualifications
Knowledge of and ability to interpret and apply related federal, state, and local laws, ordinances, rules and regulations.
Knowledge of and the ability to interpret and apply related University policies, procedures, principles, and practices.

Anticipated Salary Range
The minimum hiring salary for this position is $34,520.00 and is commensurate with experience and education.
