Description of primary duties and responsibilities::
Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit:
Fayetteville State University (FSU), a public comprehensive, historically Black university, offers robust and innovative degree programs rooted in the liberal arts tradition. FSU’s Office of Strategic Communication (OSC) is housed within the Office of the Chancellor. The OSC is charged with planning, creating, and implementing communication strategies to engage target audiences to include prospective students, current students, families of prospective and current students, faculty and staff, donors, partners, decision-makers and the media. The purpose of the engagement is to increase enrollment, partnerships, support, and financial contributions, per FSU’s strategic plan.
Primary Purpose of the Position:
The Visual Arts Specialist (University Graphic Designer) supports the work of the Office of Strategic Communication by supervising and coordinating all aspects of work related to official university publications to include, but not limited to, The FSU Bronco Pride Magazine, design of Bronco Bulletin Newsletter, Alumni Weekly E-blasts, Commencement Programs, and others. The position is responsible for the accumulation of materials for inclusion and the layout and design of those materials into publications that reflects the superior status of the university. The position coordinates the creation of public documents that enhance the university image and that provide information to the general public and campus personnel. Reporting to the Associate Vice Chancellor of Strategic Communication the University Graphic Designer directs the design and production of print communications and related marketing publications. The position assists in the supervision of the university graphic identity to produce a creative and compelling visual brand. The Director manages the workflow of print publications, serves as a lead designer on high-level projects and works closely with the supervisor on digital media needs, including the university website and digital media. The position works closely with other internal graphic artists and serves as a senior resource for those positions. The position works to ensure consistent design, style, and branding in support of strategic communications and marketing.
Description of Work Continued::
University Publications – 50%: Direct responsibility for coordination of university publications including creative concept development, creative design, layout, print production, and/or electronic dissemination. Works closely with supervision to develop and implement appropriate policies and procedures related to publications management and the application of university brand. Serves as the senior-level designer for all university publications including the official university magazine and other publications for which the department has responsibility. Oversees print production, as needed, for publications through vendors of varying capabilities to assure that all projects are completed with high quality and within mandated time frames and budgets. The position serves as the principal contact with the campus community on publications management matters and works with the campus community to proactively determine publication needs.
Design Development – 40%: Develops other layout and design items as needed and assigned in support of ongoing university work, including, but not limited to, brochures, booklets, fliers, etc. Works closely with internal graphic artists to ensure high standards of print materials for the university, and serves as the senior design person for input and recommendation on design issues. Assists in the design of communications and marketing materials in support of university admissions recruitment, advancement, administration and other campus constituents. Demonstrates creative problem-solving skills with solutions and recommendations. The position develops graphic and other visual elements and ensures their consistent and appropriate use in all printed and digital materials and creations. Demonstrates creative problem-solving skills and solid artistic design, color and typography sensibilities. Works with the on-campus print facility to provide low-cost printing alternatives to campus constituencies, as needed.
Brand Protection – 10%: Reviews submitted items to ensure appropriate use of brand and identity elements in university messaging from other campus departments. Serves as consultant to university constituents for interpretation of brand and proper use. Promotes the university brand by ensuring proper use of design elements such as the university logo, seal, spirit logos, word marks, color limitations and other elements of the university brand identity. Presents brand messaging and use to campus entities as needed or assigned for education and enrichment of use.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements::
Graduation from high school or equivalent and two years of visual/graphic arts experience related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience.
