BASIC FUNCTION:
Under the direction of the Grounds Supervisor, perform grounds maintenance, gardening and construction work.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
Groundskeeper Gardener II incumbents perform grounds maintenance, gardening and construction work. Incumbents are assigned semi-skilled to skilled construction work and positions require experience in one or more of the construction trades. Groundskeeper-Gardener I incumbents are assigned grounds maintenance and gardening work.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
Plant, cultivate, water, spray and propagate plants, shrubs hedges and flowers; prepare and treat soil for planting.
Plant, fertilize and care for lawns.
Spade and fertilize flowerbeds and set out plants.
Trim hedges, shrubs and trees.
Hoe weeds, rake leaves and perform general grounds maintenance work.
Provide work direction and guidance to others as assigned.
Maintain supplies tools and equipment in safe and proper working condition.
Prepare, set up and maintain athletic fields and related areas.
Assist in setting up for special events.
Under the temporary direction of a journey-level trades worker, perform construction, maintenance and repair work to various buildings, structures and accessories using techniques of carpentry, plumbing, pipe fitting, tiling, masonry, painting, cementing, asphalt patching and paving trades.
Perform routine duties in the installation and maintenance of sprinkler systems.
Operate power edgers and mowers, trucks, tractors and attachments, sweepers, skip loaders, forklifts and other assigned equipment.
Perform custodial or maintenance duties during vacations or on a relief basis as assigned.
Schedule grounds maintenance and gardening work according to weather, time and equipment requirements.
Operate a district vehicle to travel from site-to-site to conduct work.
Utilize pesticides, herbicides and other chemicals in the control and eradication of pests and weeds as assigned.
Perform related duties as assigned.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
Any combination equivalent to: sufficient training and experience to demonstrate the knowledge and abilities listed above and one year of experience in grounds maintenance and gardening plus one year experience in the construction trades.
OTHER QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge/Areas of Expertise:
Basic tools, materials, equipment, methods and procedures utilized in the construction trades. Tools, materials, equipment and methods used in grounds maintenance and gardening work.
Principles of progating and maintaining trees, shrubs, flowers, and lawns.
Safe work practices.
Safe and proper use and storage of hazardous and toxic substances.
Abilities/Skills:
Perform grounds maintenance, gardening and construction work.
Perform a wide variety of grounds maintenance and gardening work.
Utilize required hand and power tools and equipment in a safe and efficient manner.
Schedule grounds maintenance and gardening work according to weather, time and equipment requirements.
Read and write at the level required for successful job performance.
Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.
Understand and follow oral and written directions.
Work independently with little direction.
Provide work direction to others.
Licenses or Other Requirements:
Valid California driver’s license.
Possession of a Pest Control Operator’s license may be required for some positions in this class.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Sit and standing for prolonged periods of time.
Bending, kneeling, walking and stooping for long periods of time.
Walking while operative gardening equipment.
Pushing, and pulling heavy loads in a wheelbarrow.
Reaching above shoulders for equipment.
Exposed to direct sunlight, rain and humidity while working outside for extended periods of times.
Working in and around traffic while sweeping streets and clearing branches.
Work inside aerial man lift at heights above ground when trimming large trees.
Exposure to operation of noisy equipment such as blowers, chain saws, weed-eaters and other power tools.
Exposure to vibration while operating vehicles or power equipment.
Exposed to airborne particles.
Contact with herbicides and pesticides.
Exposed to odors from rodent traps.

Starting salary is $5,088 per month.
Generally, new employees start at the first step on the salary schedule. Advanced salary placement may be considered on a case-by-case basis. Salary increases are granted on the first day of the month following each year of service, until Step F is reached ($6,498 monthly).
Employees contribute 8% of their earnings toward the Public Employees Retirement System (PERS)
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
This is a full-time, twelve-month classified staff position subject to a six-month probationary period. Excellent fringe benefits include eight 32-hour workweeks during the summer. Two (2) positions with the following working hours:Tuesday through Saturday, 6:00 AM to 2:30 PM and/or Monday through Friday 6:00am to 2:30 PM, must be available to work during certain shifts as required.

Sick Leave and Disability
Paid sick leave is granted equal to one day for each month of service. Sick leave days may be accumulated indefinitely. Rather than State Disability Insurance.
Retirement
Public Employees Retirement System (PERS) and Social Security. Previous employment performed in a different public retirement system may allow eligibility to continue in the same retirement system.
Summer Work Hours
During the summer, employees work eight 32-hour work weeks with full pay.
