Job Summary

Under general supervision by the Associate Chief of Behavioral Health Services, the hospital-based Infant Mental Health (IMH) Psychologist provides clinical and supportive care in hospital-based pediatric services such as Labor and Delivery, Mother Baby, and the neonatal ICU as an extension of the Psychiatric Consultation-Liaison (C-L) Service. This position will also work collaboratively with the primary C-L Psychiatry team, Ambulatory Care Services, Outpatient Behavioral Health Services, and other hospital departments to develop the infant mental health consultation and intervention program. Participates in quality improvement initiatives, research, and other efforts to ensure sustainability of infant mental health services. Strives to create a positive experience for patients and their families as well as to support the needs of the multi-disciplinary primary teams. Engages in regular communication with behavioral health leadership and supervisors and attends patient rounds and staff meetings as indicated by the needs of the primary team. Is respectful of the roles of all multi-disciplinary providers and engages with their colleagues to provide collaborative, compassionate, and quality care to patients. Collaborates with community partners and stakeholders both internal and external as needed. There may be teaching and supervision opportunities available with the doctoral psychology internship trainees. May assist in supervision in other areas including on the Proactive Pediatric Psychology Consultation-Liaison (PPPCL) Service. Advances the overall infant mental health vision of the organization. Has a passion for providing care for diverse and underserved populations and promoting health equity.

Essential Functions:

• Provides high-quality clinical care interventions with infant and early childhood mental health populations and facilitate increased support and engagement in dyadic work with families and caregivers.
• Provides trauma-informed care and is available to support parent and family following a challenging or traumatic birth process.
• Provides psychosocial risk assessments and supportive interventions at bedside to parents and families.
• Generates documentation of psychotherapeutic and assessment services in the medical record in a timely fashion.
• Provides teaching and presentation of relevant topics to colleagues, staff, and patients when indicated.
• Provides staff support and education regarding family centered care and psychosocial issues.
• In collaboration with the needs of case management, can connect families with outpatient behavioral health services and resources.
• Participates in departmental and interdepartmental infant mental health meetings to maintain cohesion and continuity of care.
• Communicates and liaises with our primary inpatient C-L Psychiatry team and outpatient behavioral health providers to comprehensively address parent and family needs.
• Collaborates with leadership in program evaluation and improvement and in other areas as assigned and directed.
• Develops new program initiatives to better support families in the above-mentioned inpatient services, including, but not limited to, long-term and out-of-state families.
• Partners with the Infant Mental Health team, physicians, and other team members in quality improvement and research projects.
• Collaborates with leadership on goals to promote diversity, equity, and inclusivity in the workplace and to promote health equity.
• With a primary focus on IMH, there may be opportunities to supervise psychology practicum students, psychology doctoral interns, and postdoctoral fellows in collaboration with the Associate Chief of Behavioral Health Services and other members of the Division of Psychology.

Education:

• Doctorate Degree in psychology from an accredited school Required
• Post-doctoral fellowship in pediatric psychology or related area, required.
• Educational background in Human Development and Family Studies, Early Childhood Education, Social Work, Psychology, or related field, preferred.
• Familiarity with adult mental health and/or infant mental health is desirable.
• Work experience in critical care and/or oncology settings, preferred.

Work Experience:

• Experience in infant mental health, early childhood developmental screening, family systems, and coordination of care with special needs, strongly preferred.
• Bilingual Spanish skills, strongly preferred.
• Endorsement for Culturally Sensitive, Relationship-Focused Practice Promoting Infant Mental Health(IMH-E ) through the Colorado Association for Infant Mental Health preferred.

Licenses:

• PSY-Licensed Psychologist – State Board of Psychologist Examiners Required and
• BLS-Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) – AHA – American Heart Association Required

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

• Advanced knowledge and skills in effective psychological pediatric practice in medical settings, particularly with regard to infant mental health services, including evidence-based therapy modalities, crisis intervention, and risk assessment.
• Knowledge of patient populations’ cultural, religious, ethnic, and social systems in interactions, care planning, and education.
• Knowledge of medical terms, abbreviations, diagnoses, treatment, and prognosis.
• Excellent interpersonal skills and motivation to work as part of a dynamic interdisciplinary team in a medical setting.
• Skills in providing care appropriate to the age of the patients served within the clinical setting.
• Skills in providing trauma-informed care within the clinical setting.
• Skills in establishing a therapeutic alliance and engaging the patient in collaborative goal setting and prioritizing patient needs as part of the care team in the primary care clinical setting.
• Excellent written communication skills, with ability to write grant proposals and other academic materials.
• Ability to give and receive constructive feedback and incorporate it into practice.
