Phillips 66 has been deeply invested in the battery industry, initially by providing specialty carbon materials into the anode value chain, and more recently moving down the U.S. value chain through an investment in anode producer Novonix. We have announced our efforts in the sodium-ion battery space, as well, through technical collaboration with the U.K. battery producer Faradion. The battery industry is growing like never before, and we are excited to continue establishing ourselves as an exceptional provider of anode materials, thereby providing energy & improving lives.
Phillips 66 is currently accepting applications for a **Battery Material Development Scientist/ Engineer** position within the Innovation & Research organization at the Phillips 66 Research Center in Bartlesville, Oklahoma. The selected candidate will be part of a product development team. This position directly supports development of new carbon-based battery anode materials for lithium ion and sodium ion batteries with an aim towards rapid commercialization. Responsibilities include collaboration with local and international team members to innovate as well as fully understand the performance-determining characteristics of newly developed products.
+ Executing all research work with a paramount focus on safety.
+ Conducting hands-on research and collaborative research with internal and external stakeholders to enable anode material development with an aim towards rapid commercialization.
+ Building out in-house processing and battery testing capabilities and ensuring reliable data quality for scaled production/measurements.
+ Developing measures to improve/analyze data quality as needed, including design of experiments, use of relevant statistical analysis software and data visualization tools.
+ Providing technical guidance to the projects and working with team members to identify research targets and develop detailed experimental protocols to assess materials & meet identified targets.
+ Producing and analyzing data from advanced material analysis and battery testing to evaluate research outcomes.
+ Presenting data in written and oral format to internal and external stakeholders.
+ Doctorate degree in Chemistry, Engineering, or science related field
+ 3 or more years of experience in battery related R&D, manufacturing, or related arts
+ Strong background in electrochemistry
+ Track record of battery-related patents/publications
+ Working knowledge in solid state material synthesis and characterizations (BET, SEM/EDX, XPS, etc.)
+ Ability to apply research and statistical analysis techniques to make sound, data-driven conclusions with a focus on driving products to market
+ Strong verbal and written communication skills, including detailed documentation of lab results and procedures
+ Doctorate degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or related field, with specialization in battery anodes
+ A strong experimental and theoretical background related to lithium-ion and sodium-ion batteries
+ Technical expertise in thermodynamics, and structure-function relationships
+ Experience in use of commercially relevant equipment for material synthesis or experience of scale-up from lab scale to pilot scale or beyond
+ Experience fabricating electronic devices, especially battery cells (coin cells and/or pouch cells)
+ Experience in understanding of battery material chemistry and decay mechanisms using both electrochemical analytical tools and material characterization
+ Experience with CV, LSV, EIS, GITT, PITT, or other electrochemical characterization techniques
