Manage the administrative and business operations for the Classics Department, which includes the Lab of Dendrochronology (also known as Tree Ring Lab). Supervise two administrative staff and provide direction and support for research and technical staff reporting to faculty and lab director. Oversee and coordinate administrative support for teaching programs, undergraduate majors/minors and awards, graduate fields, seminars, commencement and other department functions. Monitor, oversee and forecast balances for appropriated, gift, sponsored, and endowment accounts. Manage department finances and assigned space. Understand and apply human resource, financial, and other administrative policies. Understand and manage the interrelationships across these areas and the cross-functional impact of program and resource decisions. Communicate and collaborate with chair and lab director regularly to develop and implement short and long-term fiscal, operational and human resource needs. Institute sound administrative procedures to ensure consistency, fairness and compliance in operations. Coordinate with the college and university in a wide range of administrative matters.
The Classics Department is in the College of Arts & Sciences. The Classics Department consists of fourteen professorial faculty, four additional academics, two non-academic staff, twenty-five graduate students, twenty-four majors/minors, and an annual operating budget of $3.7 million.
Position is 100% time. The expectation is for the manager to work on-campus. The possibility to work remotely one day per week, may be addressed after an initial period of training.
Required Qualifications:
The department manager is a generalist, as such, this position requires competencies across multiple functional areas. To be successful, a candidate for the position should possess:
– A bachelor’s degree plus five to seven years of relevant experience or the equivalent combination
– Proven supervisory, managerial, organizational, financial, analytical and problem-solving skills and experience
– An in-depth understanding and appreciation of academic department business activities
– A good working knowledge of office technology, including word processing, spreadsheets, financial and HR systems
– A proven ability to successfully and simultaneously manage multiple areas, deadlines and events
– Strong interpersonal and communication skills as well as the ability to cultivate and maintain a collaborative and effective work environment
Preferred Qualifications: Managerial and supervisory experience in an academic department setting preferred.
