Working independently, manage the administrative and business operations for the Comparative Literature department, a stellar Humanities program with strong undergraduate and graduate programs, and the Russian Language Program (within the Department).
Manage the academic and non-academic appointment process and HR related matters, review, process and implement budget and accounting matters for the organization, and departmental space and equipment resources. Supervise an administrative assistant position and possible student employees. Interpret and implement administrative policies and procedures and ensure compliance with university policies and relevant external regulations. Provide departmental website content management. Working with the department Chair, as well as other members of the department, manage and coordinate events. Provide or oversee administrative support for the department Chair and provide back-up for the Directors of Graduate and Undergraduate Studies in addition to the Administrative Assistant, and faculty when necessary. Liaison to the college and university with respect to non-academic administrative matters.
In addition, the Administrative Manager’s responsibilities include managing the School of Criticism & Theory by overseeing the budget, coordinating and maintaining the SCT-Cornell contract and Bylaws, overseeing and serving as a liaison for SCT’s Board of Senior and Honorary Fellows (https://sct.cornell.edu/senior-fellows), preparing faculty contracts, administering faculty payments (stipends, travel reimbursements), and organizing events in partnership with the SCT Program Coordinator

Required Qualifications: The range of functional areas for which this position is responsible, as well as the supervisory duties and the high degree of independence and autonomy with which it must operate, requires someone with several years experience in most, if not all, of the following areas: financial management, human resources, facilities, curriculum and enrollment in an academic environment. A Bachelor’s degree plus 3-5 years’ supervisory and managerial experience or equivalent combination of education and experience is necessary. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills are needed. Professional demeanor and strong verbal and written communication skills are required, as are effective interpersonal skills. Good working knowledge of office technology, including word processing, spreadsheets, and database management is needed. A proven ability to simultaneously manage multiple areas, events and deadlines, along with the ability to cultivate and maintain a collaborative and effective work environment, are necessary. An enthusiastic desire to join staff and faculty administrative team guiding the Department into a new era of strength and growth. Expertise in Word, Excel, Drupal, Kuali Financial System, Longview, Acalog, RASS desirable.
