Salary Range: $65,000 – $67,000
The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
Position Summary
The incumbent is responsible for providing support to the Law School’s administrative and faculty and students user groups; is fully accountable for the successful resolution of all client computing needs; works as a member of the IT help desk group, responding to calls for help from Columbia Law School faculty, staff, and students. This position reports to the users Services Manager but also works in close collaboration with the Director of Information Technology/Multi Media Group as needed.
Responsibilities
Installs computers/printers, and configures software on client desktop and/or notebook computers. Troubleshoots and diagnoses hardware and software configuration problems. Assists users in the proper use of their desktop computer and its hardware, the network and all supported software. (20%)
Submits work requests to system administrators on behalf of users, communicating progress until resolved. Makes product recommendations, requests price quotes, and submits purchase orders on behalf of clients from various outside vendors. (20%)
Maintains network and client local printers, this includes changing toner and arranging for external maintenance, servicing and repairs when indicated. Works on the IT help desk support related projects based on the time line the supervisors defines. Assists in the supervision of student casual technical assistants and/or casual staff performing routine service, maintenance and installation tasks. (20%)
Responsible for learning and testing new technologies on an ongoing basis, taking advantage of the many training opportunities that will be available internally and externally. Develops, maintains, and disseminates knowledge of best solutions to recurring client problems to other technicians. (15%)
Creates podcasts, on a range of IT topics and services. These podcasts will be posted to relevant sites (portals, blogs, main Law School website) for the benefit of the entire Law School community. Works with the Multimedia Group to ensure that audio and video requests are properly scheduled at the moment they’re requested. Also assists with uploading finished work to the media server and keeping its media organized and accessible to the public. Develops and maintains documentation needed for the use and maintenance of the Multimedia Group’s equipment and software. (15%)
Monitoring of critical systems and ensuring that they are operable. May be on call during certain off hours and may need to work on weekends (e.g., during Orientation or on‑call duty). Carries cell phone to respond to emergency situations as needed; performs other duties as required. (10%)
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree and/or equivalent. 2 years experience in a computing intensive or technical support environment desired OR very strong end‑user skills & ability to learn new technologies quickly. Reliability, attention to detail, excellent interpersonal manner, patience with end users and ability to work independently are required. Must have demonstrated excellent oral & written communication and problem‑solving skills. Requires thorough knowledge of the WWW and how to connect to and work on a network, desktop application software, at least one windows‑based spreadsheet (Excel), and one word processor (Word or WordPerfect) necessary. Must have experience with Windows 7 and Windows 10 operating systems, and Mac OS X/macOS, and at least two of the following: e‑mail ( Lotus Notes & IMAP), Internet services (e.g., TCP/IP, FTP, HTTP & WWW browsers); some basic Unix helpful. Must be able to work weekends and some evenings when required (e.g., during Orientation & weekend on‑call duty). Supervisory experience preferred but not necessary.
