Job Purpose:
The Community Oral Historian and Project Coordinator for the Lowcountry Oral History Initiative (LOHI) will identify and cultivate partner organizations that represent marginalized communities from across the Lowcountry. This position will work to foster these partnerships with communities, organizations, and cultural institutions in the South Carolina Lowcountry to develop community-centered oral history projects, including post-custodial models of stewardship. Organizations that choose to participate will be trained on planning, conducting, and preserving their own oral history projects and will be awarded financial stipends for their time and efforts.
In addition to working with community leaders to host listening sessions, build partnerships, and provide training on the complete oral history lifecycle to support the recording, preservation, and access of under-represented histories and voices by the community members themselves, this position will also be responsible for planning and conducting some project oral histories and will work closely with Lowcountry Digital Library faculty to ensure that best practices for access and preservation are employed.
Minimum Requirements:
Master’s degree with a minimum of five years of experience managing an oral history program or an ABD in history (or related field) with demonstrated knowledge of oral history best practices and significant coursework in the history of the American South is required. Ph.D. in history (or a related field) with a focus on the history of the American South is preferred. Candidates with an equivalent combination of experience and/or education are encouraged to apply.

*This is a temporary, 20 month, grant position exempt from grievance rights. This position is funded by other than State monies and continuation of this position is contingent upon availability of these funds.
