Department Statement:
The Writing and Speaking Center (WSC) at Colgate University invites applications for a Writing and Speaking Center Coordinator for academic year 2023-24. This is a non-renewable position beginning immediately upon hire and ending June 30, 2024. The WSC seeks a dynamic colleague prepared to uphold and contribute to the mission and values of the Writing and Speaking Center as it seeks to support WSC peer consultants and WSC student clients, as well as foster lively and robust writing and speaking cultures on campus.

Peer Consultant Training and Mentoring
Description:
Demonstrated expertise in Writing and Speaking Center theory and best practices. Demonstrated ability to foster a strong communal culture among Center staff and to mentor peer consultants in their individual work to shape client learning and growth. Demonstrated ability to develop and work within a generational-knowledge leadership structure (where experienced peer consultants influence and pass knowledge to new consultants). Demonstrated expertise in designing and implementing training meetings, workshops, and outreach modules. Strong research skills to continually inform and evolve best practices.

Description:
Knowledge sufficient to effectively engage students on issues of equity and diversity. Demonstrated ability to be a strong advocate for linguistic diversity with proven ability to work with diverse populations’ engagement with US academic English. Demonstrated background in linguistic diversity training as it pertains to peer consultant mentoring; and established experience engaging various constituencies across differences of language, race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, class, (dis)ability, and spiritual backgrounds.

Description:
Knowledge and skill in understanding issues of language, race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, class, (dis)ability and spiritual backgrounds and their intersectionality; knowledge and skill in aiding students with diverse academic experiences (particularly first-gen students and students who have had inequitable academic experiences in previous schooling) as they adjust to and meet the expectations of the University’s academic culture.

Description:
Demonstrated expertise in event planning and implementation sufficient to ensure events and training series meetings meet Writing and Speaking Center goals, and are held in compliance with University policies and procedures. Strong communication and outreach skills in scheduling and conducting events and training meetings. Where applicable, expertise in risk management sufficient to avoid material consequences to the University.

Skill in implementing policies and troubleshooting scheduling conflicts and on-site logistics. Ability to apply techniques of assessment to measure programmatic effectiveness and to connect intended peer consultant outcomes, priorities and goals to the Center’s and the Institution’s outcomes, priorities and goals.

Professional Experience/ Qualifications:
Experience tutoring or consulting in a college writing and/or speaking center or equivalent teaching experience required; multilingual expertise or tutor training experience preferred. Demonstrable understanding of, and sensitivity to, the diverse backgrounds, identities, and learning needs of students required.
Education:
A Bachelor’s degree is required.
A Master’s degree is preferred.
Other Information:
Due to the scope of responsibilities, Colgate alumni are preferred. Other qualifying applications will be considered.
