Technical support for coastal ecology studies focused on vegetation and abiotic processes. Duties include routine field and lab work related to monitoring tidal marsh salinity and vegetation community composition, tidal freshwater forest productivity, and tree physiology. Travel and overnight stays will be required but are generally limited to 4 days away per month. Some fieldwork will utilize 60 hp outboard boats to reach study sites, followed by hiking floatant marshes and tidal swamps. Lab duties generally include weighing dried tree litter and herbaceous marsh samples and entering data to digital form. Other duties as assigned.
JOB DUTIES:
50% – Essential – Field data collection: Drive outboard motor boats along rivers, hike varying distances to data collection points, calibrate and download data from various types of water depth and salinity sensors, collect marsh plant samples, measure tree growth, download data and replace expended batteries (car size) from tree sap flow equipment, and assist with graduate student research projects.
30% – Essential – Lab data collection: Dry and weigh monthly samples of tree (leaf) litter, and bi-annual samples of herbaceous marsh plants.
10% – Essential – Other duties as assigned: Assist cooperators with field research, build research infrastructure (e.g., boardwalks, litter traps), assisting with Baruch Institute functions (e.g., public programs, scientific meetings), and similar tasks that support the goals of the University, Institute, and faculty.
5% – Essential – Data management: Scan/digitize field data sheets and upload data from tablet to online repositories.
5% – Essential – Field preparation: Collect necessary gear and data sheets for field data collection events, attend monthly meetings to coordinate schedules.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Education – High School or Equivalent – Environmental health programs, environmental quality control programs or wildlife/fisheries mgmt
Education – 1st Bachelor’s Degree – can be substituted with related experience
Licenses – Drivers License Class D normal < 26,000

PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS:
Education – 1st Master’s Degree – Plant ecology, forestry, or similar natural resources emphases.
Experience – Wetland ecology studies to include herbaceous plants, tree physiology, and salinity impacts. Proficiency in driving and trailering “john boat” sized outboard motor boats.
Licenses & Certifications – Department of Interior Motorboat Operators Certification Course.
