The City of Irvine seeks an Assistant Planner in the Community Development Department. The Assistant Planner will perform entry-level professional planning, project management, and analysis tasks related to assigned projects or duties in the areas of development, environmental review, zoning, General Plan, and land use matters.

The focuses on planning and implementing standards that maintain the City’s high quality of life. The department consists of three divisions: Planning & Development Services, Housing, and Building & Safety. Planning and Development Services oversees all current and long range-range planning programs for the City. The division develops, maintains and implements the General Plan and Zoning Ordinance policies and standards. The division is responsible for reviewing and processing all development applications and permits, assisting residents, businesses and developers on all land use planning and zoning inquiries, and coordinating regional and interagency planning efforts. Housing oversees the Cities Inclusionary Housing Ordinance, Affordable Housing, One Irvine Residential Rehabilitation Program and all Housing grants. Building and Safety’s permit counter, plan check, inspection, code enforcement, and water quality teams ensure that development in the City of Irvine is designed, constructed, used, and maintained in accordance with the Irvine Municipal Codes, California Building Codes, and water quality standards.

The selection process will include an examination and conduct a background investigation prior to appointment. This recruitment may establish an eligibility list to fill future positions within the organization’s similar and/or lower classifications.
