The Human Factors Intern participates as a practicum student in the department of Patient Safety. The intern gains valuable exposure to the field of patient safety in a healthcare system through shadowing, participation in meetings, projects, event investigations, and other professional experiences. This position requires introductory level of understanding of the body of knowledge, methods, and skills related to human factors. The intern will use a variety of human factors methodologies, such as observations, interviews, surveys, workflow assessments, and usability testing. The intern will assist in a variety of projects which may include needs assessments, data collection, analysis, report writing, and presentations, and will also act as collaborator on existing projects. Projects often span across multiple departments, requiring teamwork and organization skills. This also includes working with frontline staff to identify system issues and problem solve collaboratively. The intern’s assigned projects are customized towards the intern’s interests in conjunction with the needs of the organization. The intern completes all assigned projects alongside a preceptor. The intern will have mentoring opportunities with other patient safety team members, in addition to their preceptor.

SCOPE & LEVEL
Guidelines: Trains in the field and assists higher level personnel to acquire learning through practical experience.
Complexity: Performs routine and/or basic tasks common to the field. Procedures, methods, and techniques to be used are well established with options to be considered well defined. Tools, work aids, and materials to be used are specified.
Decision Making: Duties assigned are primarily routine, repetitive, and restricted in intricacy with little or no discretion in how they are carried out.
Communications: Contacts with team members, clients or the public where factual information relative to the organization or its functions are received, relayed, or a service rendered according to established procedures or instructions.
Supervision Received: Under close supervision, the employee receives training to develop skills and abilities in a specific line of work or general occupational area. Work product is subject to close, continuous inspection.

Salary Information
Annual Salary Range (Based on 40 hours worked per week): $68,226.41 to $102,339.62
Hourly Salary Range: $32.80 to $49.20
