Building Audacity was started in 2019 to build power for youth and communities of color in the Greater Boston area. We listen deeply to our youth and communities about the types of change they wish to see and provide them the tools, resources, and connections to lead that change.

About Jean Charles Academy (JCA)
In 2020,Building Audacitycreated the Jean Charles Academy in response to the lack of needed educational opportunities available to Black students. JCA began offering virtual learning resources in Spring 2020, responding to the requests from local students and families for culturally and linguistically appropriate learning resources while in-person schooling was suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2021, JCA opened its first campus in Lynn, MA. The in-person education center provides instruction for grades PreK- 8th grade and is open Monday – Friday from 7:30am- 4pm. In the middle of Jean Charles Academy is a 5,000 sq ft hydroponic center that provides food to 700 Greater Boston families and youth focused entrepreneurship opportunities.

Position Overview
Starting July, Coaches (Teachers) will be trained by licensed teachers and instruction coaches to learn Building Audacity’s approach to building inclusive equitable learning spaces. Once trained, Coaches will have a licensed teacher mentor to support their instruction and lesson planning throughout the 23-24 school year. Coaches will work with a cohort of PreK students from Monday- Friday between 7:30-4:00pm. Average class size will range from 6-9 students.

Responsibilities

• Attending regular culturally responsive professional development trainings.
• Meeting weekly with a licensed teacher mentor to review teaching strategies and lesson plans.
• Assisting students with homework, projects, test preparation, papers, research and other academic tasks.
• Working with students to help them understand key concepts, especially those learned in the classroom.
• Teaching skills to improve academic performance, including study strategies, note-taking skills and approaches to answering test questions.
• Demonstrating academic best practices for specific subjects and assignments, including research and writing tactics.
• Developing and distributing teaching materials to supplement classroom lessons, including study guides.
• Providing students positive and constructive feedback.
• Offering feedback on progress to students’ parents and teachers through students’ individual learning plans.

Desired Skills

• Experienced educators ready to make change in the field of education preferred.
• Fluency in English and one of the following languages: Spanish, Haitian Creole, or Portuguese.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills to clearly explain challenging concepts, provide instructions and deliver feedback.
• Ability to motivate and encourage students to improve their academic performance using effective goal-setting strategies.
• Creativity and flexibility in order to personalize their learning approach for individual students.
• Patience and compassion for students as they develop skills and improve their performance.
