Brigham and Women’s Hospital Hiring for NURSE MANAGER TRANSPLANT, Lung Transplant at Boston, MA  Full Time

1. The manager is responsible for leading and managing the Lung Transplant nurse practitioners and registered nurse coordination services of the BWH which includes oversight of pre, inpatient, and post ambulatory services. He/she has direct supervisory and management responsibility for the Lung Transplant registered nurses and nurse practitioners.
2. The manager collaborates closely with the Medical and Surgical Directors of the Transplant Programs, and the Nurse Director of Transplant Administration, to create and capture value through enhanced clinical practice, and facilitate identification and resolution of issues related to transplant nursing clinical practices.
3. The manager provides effective direction, guidance, training, ongoing education, and supervision of all Lung Transplant nurses and nurse practitioners, assuring the maximum quality of care, patient satisfaction, efficient practice, effective teamwork, and adherence to procedures and standards.
4. Establishes and promotes effective communications and strong professional working relationships with members of the transplant teams; transplant and other administration staff; hospital departments, inpatient Nurse Directors, as well as with relevant outside organizations.
5. Leads and actively participates in the program and patient outreach initiatives, in strong collaboration with medical and surgical physician directors, as well as transplant administration and hospital business development.
6. Trains to cover all positions as needed to support patient care.
7. Assist in providing care for patients across all phases of the Lung Transplant program as clinically indicated.
8. Collaborates and aids direct colleagues in other solid organ transplant programs as needed and assigned.
9. Other duties as assigned by Nurse Director, Medical Director, and/or Surgical Director.

Quality of Care:

1. The nurse manager participates in the Transplant and VAD Quality Assurance/Process Improvement (QAPI) Programs and compliance-related activities.
2. Maximizes quality and efficiency in workflow through continuous process improvement with program teams, with a focus on interprofessional teams.
3. Content expert in EPIC focusing on Phoenix, medical management episodes (MME) and other ambulatory applications as needed. Leads initiatives for Phoenix and MME utilization and enhancements.
4. Influences institutional and nursing policies through appropriate channels (committee membership), collaborates on nurse-directed protocols and shepherds them through institutional approval to unit-based adoption, and quality control.

Data Activities:

1. Collects demographic and clinical data from hospital computer systems, administrative sources, charts, and weekly conferences and enters data into heart transplant databases as needed, including the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) system.
2. Provides research nurses with clinical data on subjects enrolled in research studies.
3. May be asked to assist in writing summaries for administrative or clinical purposes as requested by the Nurse Manager, Nurse Director, or Medical Director of the Lung Transplant Program.

Management:

1. Participates in professional, institutional, and community organizations relevant to transplantation
2. Manages changes in RN and NP staffing schedules and appropriately adjusts resources to ensure clinical needs are being met.
3. In collaboration with the Nurse Director, authorizes hours worked by nursing staff including any overtime and direct recipient of sick and tardy calls for clinical staff.
4. Ensures weekly timecards are processed accordingly.
5. Assumes accountability for yearly performance evaluations of RNs and NPs.

• Bachelor’s in Nursing required. MSN preferred. Current registration in Massachusetts.
• Current license to practice as a Registered Nurse or Nurse Practitioner in the State of Massachusetts.

Experience:

1. Minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible, clinically related (pulmonary, thoracic, transplant) experience required.
2. Transplant coordination experience strongly preferred.
3. Previous nursing management experience strongly preferred.
4. Transplant coordinator certification or ability to achieve certification upon hire is strongly preferred.
5. Must be mission-driven, a strong team player with excellent communication skills.
6. Continually updates clinical knowledge and skills through formal and informal education and review of the current literature.
7. Must work well independently, have sound decision-making skills and work effectively with and through inter-professional colleagues when required to make and facilitate complex decisions.

SKILLS/ ABILITIES/ COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:

1. Ability to work independently while collaborating with others in the care of complex patients with advanced lung disease, multiple co-morbidities, and eventual lung transplantation.
2. Excellent written and oral communication skills to work with individuals from various fields of expertise, including physicians, nurses, hospital administrators and outside clinical and administrative providers. Flexibility, excellent judgment, and the ability to work independently and as part of a team are essential.
3. Excellent organizational abilities to formulate and meet rigorous clinical timetables.
4. Must display interpersonal skills and ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary team.
5. Maintains communication with other transplant programs in order to keep abreast of current information.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

On campus at BWH Main Campus or off-site locations as directed by the Nurse Director. This include in the state of MA and outside the state of MA which may require further licensure in those states. Administrative office, outpatient and inpatient settings as needed. Working conditions may include busy and and stressful patient care encounters, and environments where there may be exposure to communicable diseases and hazardous materials.
