The Rhetoric Department in the College of General Studies at Boston University invites applications for a two-year Lecturer position (with a possibility of renewal) beginning in Fall 2024. We are eager to welcome a colleague who supports our institutional commitment to ensuring BU is an inclusive, equitable, and diverse place where all community members can thrive.
As part of our Boston-London program, Lecturers in Rhetoric teach three sections of RH 103 in Boston in the spring and three sections of RH 104 in London in either Summer 1 (May-June) or Summer 2 (July-August). The fall is reserved for collaborative curricular planning and scholarship. Teaching at our Boston campus starts in January 2025 and continues with a highly experiential Summer semester at our campus in London, U.K. During the London semester, faculty receive a per diem housing allowance, transportation coverage, and a family-travel stipend in addition to their salary. We offer support to new faculty (including peer-mentoring, travel research funds, and professional development) as we want to see you flourish.
We are a college with a long history of teaching excellence. Our pedagogies reflect the interdisciplinary and living-learning mission of the college and aim to help students engage across historical, social, cultural and philosophical differences. Therefore, all faculty at the college work collaboratively on “teams” composed of four faculty from different disciplines (two Rhetoric, one Social Science, one Humanities). The members of each team design their syllabi in relation to six key moments in history and plan events and trips that demonstrate the relevance and applicability of classroom topics and materials. We seek applicants who value working in a team environment, are interested in using Boston and London as their classrooms and are excited about diversifying our curriculum and engaging with a globally diverse student population.
Candidates should have a PhD or other terminal degree by August 2024 in Rhetoric/Composition or other Humanities-related field and should have experience teaching rhetoric and/or first-year writing with a commitment to inclusive pedagogy. We value the different voices that make up our community and welcome colleagues who complement and enhance rather than reproduce our existing areas of expertise. We are excited to learn about your expertise and innovation in the teaching of written, oral, and digital communication as well as experiential learning. Candidates from historically marginalized groups are strongly encouraged to apply.
Deadline for all applications: Nov. 22, 2023. Your application materials should include a cover letter, CV, three confidential letters of recommendation, and a one-page statement of teaching philosophy that explains how you would contribute to Boston University’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. Email materials to [email protected], and address correspondence to Dr. Stephanie Byttebier, Chair of the Division of Rhetoric. (Do not apply through the Boston University HR website.) First round of interviews will be conducted in early January on Zoom. Please note that the college is also advertising openings in its Humanities division.
Boston University has a comprehensive benefits package for eligible employees. This includes medical, dental, retirement, tuition remission, and transportation benefits.
Boston University is an equal opportunity employer and all qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability status, protected veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law. Boston University is committed to building a culturally diverse faculty and strongly encourages applications from female and minority candidates. We are a VEVRAA Federal Contractor.
