Working under the general direction of the Director of Research Administration, the Laboratory Operations Manager is responsible for supporting daily operations and compliance of 8 DOM Section Lab spaces (24 Labs) with support and oversight of two lab coordinator. The Research Operation Manager will lead the Lab Coordinators in documenting lab operations, compliance and special projects. This position is also responsible for planning and coordinating activities related to building space that vary in scope including the management of resources in a matrix environment. The Research Operation Manager will develop and implement special projects assigned by the VC, Research and Director of Research Administration while adhering to Boston University and Boston Medical Center guidelines.
Laboratory Operations
Oversee the overall day to day supervision and operation of laboratory common space. Includes developing Standard Operating Procedures, managing supply inventory and developing communications strategies. Collaborate with faculty and facilities team to specify equipment needs. Manage all equipment purchase orders, service agreements, maintenance, and repairs.
Laboratory Compliance
Works with BU and BMC Facilities, Environmental Health & Safety and Housekeeping to ensure lab training and compliance. Works with Lab coordinators to coordinate equipment tagging, disposal and chemical removal. Serves as primary department contact for building repairs and maintenance. Update the lab equipment inventory spreadsheet anytime a major piece of equipment is moved in and out of a lab. Make sure the fume hoods are working properly by contacting EHS once a year to have them serviced. Assist in coordinating maintenance and calibrations for Biosafety Cabinets, Laminar Flow Workstations, Ice Machines, Autoclaves, Washers, Film Developers, and Pipettes. Ensure the lab remains safe and orderly and take prompt corrective action when unsafe conditions, practices, or equipment are reported.
Lab Density and Space Assignment
Manages the Annual Space Survey for the Department of Medicine, in coordination with a team of Lab Coordinators and Institutional Research Offices to ensure space is accurately reported and appropriately assigned. Provides direct guidance to faculty and staff on the opening and closing of lab space, and renovations. Provides monthly report on space density and allocation to the Vice Chair, Research and Director of Research Administration.
Administrative Management
Will be responsible for training and the annual performance evaluation for two lab coordinators that support eight research labs in the Department of Medicine. The Research Operations Manager is responsible for providing oversight and leadership for lab operations. Must ensure institutional compliance of health and safety requirements. Provides guidance and aids in the decision making process for Basic Science labs with oversight from the Vice Chair of Research and Director of Research Administration. Leads meetings and presents updates on DOM research core monthly. Communicates lab updates and changes to Section ADs and Section Chiefs. Assist with additional administrative task as needed.
