Al-Quds Bard College is seeking candidates to teach in its Core Division beginning in the
fall 2022 semester. The Core Division offers a series of undergraduate courses in text-based study and composition required of all Al-Quds
Bard College students during their first two years of study, following a model applied across the world in the Bard College network. Faculty
in the Core Division should be able to teach the First Year Seminar and Second Year Seminar, courses which introduce students to intensive
critical analysis of texts from a wide variety of eras, places, and disciplines. For this position, we seek a faculty member who will, in
addition to teaching Core courses in English, teach in and lead the Core division’s offerings in Arabic Composition, a required
two-semester course for undergraduates in their second year of study, as well as lead the College’s offerings in Beginning and
Intermediate Arabic Language.
Our teaching methods are student-centered, involving students in active discussion and group tasks
to develop their reading, writing, speaking, production, and critical thinking skills in English. Successful candidates will be flexible
problem solvers capable of engaging texts and fields in which they are not necessarily specialists. The chosen candidate must be prepared to
teach students close reading, analytical and argumentative writing skills, research skills, and the ability to talk intelligently about
texts. S/he must also be willing to be engaged in curriculum design as well as collaboration with other faculty members in the Core
curriculum.
Now in its thirteenth year of operation, Al-Quds Bard College for Arts and Sciences (AQB) is an innovative program
offering a liberal arts undergraduate education and Master of Arts in Teaching program in Palestine, with an enrollment of 331 students in
2021-22. AQB’s undergraduate program, taught in English, is rigorous, culminating in a two-semester independent senior project, which,
in many fields, is a demanding research paper. Graduates of AQB receive two degrees: a BA or a MAT from Al-Quds University and a BA or MAT
from Bard College (New York).
Full-time faculty teach three courses per semester, supervise a minimum of two senior projects, and
are assigned a group of advisees to whom they provide academic guidance throughout the year. The holder of this position in the Core
Division generally teaches either First-Year or Second-Year Seminar. In addition, (s)he teaches multiple sections of Arabic Composition to
enable students to understand the basics of Arabic composition writing through an effective use of Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) in academic
writing while reading and analyzing novels, poems, and articles from all over the Arab world. Faculty are expected to engage in community
service to contribute to the development of AQB. This includes, but is not limited to, participation in academic committees, admissions
interviews, moderation boards, faculty development workshops, faculty meetings, and additional administrative tasks, as needed.
Qualifications
Successful candidates will be experienced and invested in interdisciplinary pedagogy,
especially the relationship between a liberal arts college’s foundational coursework and its major programs. To that end, we seek
faculty members capable of revising and facilitating a flexible, global, and academically rigorous curriculum, one that emphasizes
historical context, information literacy, and transferrable analytical, interpretive, and discursive skills.
