Job Description
Encompassing intersectional cultural mentorship, programming, student support, and navigation, the Coordinator Senior, Equitable Student Engagement and Success position reports to the Associate Director of Student and Creative Career Services, and will provide co-curricular empowerment and support to underrepresented and marginalized students in the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts. The distinct, but interconnected functional areas of student cultural mentorship and programming and equitable student support and navigation will encompass various responsibilities that directly impact the student experience. Student cultural mentorship and programming includes the support of a first-year and transfer BIPOC student program, BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, and intersectional cultural events, and affinity group and cultural student organization support. Equitable student support and navigation will encompass high-financial need student outreach and navigation, proactive financial wellness communication, and community of care support for students in financial crises.

Essential Duties
Student cultural mentorship and programming
- Oversees the collaborative operations of a first-year and transfer BIPOC student mentorship program, aimed at increasing the cultural capital, empowerment, and ultimately, the retention of BIPOC design and the arts students
- Supervises the 15 student mentors providing mentorship and support to BIPOC first-year students
- Supports and advises affinity groups for the salient racial and intersecting identities of students participating in the mentorship program
- Develops various student culture and equity events, programs, and initiatives that support and empower BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, and high-financial need students, and their various intersectional identities by collaborating with Herberger Institute (e.g., Department of Culture and Access, HIDA cultural student orgs., etc.) and ASU (e.g. Department of Cultural Connections, the Collations, etc.) campus partners
- Supports Herberger Institute identity-based student involvement and advocacy organizations in their ongoing efforts within the five schools with the Herberger Institute
- Collaborates with the Herberger Institute Culture and Access Department on ongoing change-based equity initiatives occurring within the Herberger Institute, and incorporates student involvement and perspective into the initiatives
- Trains, challenges, and supports the cultural humility of Herberger Institute staff who support students directly in their roles
- Supports departmental ‘all hands’ retention and belonging events, including Fall Welcome, Family Weekend, and other special events
Equitable student support and navigation
- Develops communication campaigns, provide 1:1 support, and other support-based programming for high financial need students
- Collaborates with ASU offices (e.g. TRiO, Scholarship Services) on different proactive resources students can utilize to support their financial wellness
- Coordinates the yearly communication of HIDA academic scholarships, discover and communicate various scholarships that can particularly impact high-financial need, BIOPIC, LGBTQIA, and undocumented students
- Communicates with high-financial need students on various important financial deadlines (e.g. FAFSA) and satisfactory academic progress violations, and support students who are requesting financial navigation
- Runs a twice-yearly campaign to students with enrollment holds by providing an accurate depiction of their balance, a timeline for important enrollment dates, and meet with students who may need additional support
- Cases manage students in financial crisis as part of the Herberger Institute Community of Care team, delegate and collectively work with campus partners (e.g., Financial Aid and Scholarship Services, the Dean of Students, etc.) on cases of financial crisis students, provide resources and support to students
General Operations
- Assess and interpret data to provide formative and summative recommendations for student learning outcomes
- Collects and analyzes data and creates reports that inform future practices, strategies, and initiatives to improve student engagement and outreach
- Prepares budget proposals and recommendations, control expenditures in accordance with budget allocations and recommend equipment and resources
- Maintains direct contact with personnel of various outside organizations and university departments
- Represents the college/department, serving on various department and university committees
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in a field appropriate to the area of assignment AND five (5) years of related experience; OR, Any equivalent combination of education and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.
Desired Qualifications
- Evidence of a Master’s degree in higher education, design and the arts, or a related field
- Demonstrated knowledge of issues pertaining to student engagement and retention, and within the context of design and the arts would be preferred
- Experience in project and event management
- Evidence in being able to work independently, demonstrate initiative, and move ideas from concept to execution
- Breadth and depth of experience affirming marginalized communities, including Black Indigenous People of Color (BIPOC), firstgen, LGBTQIA+, and disability communities
- Experience in student supervision, training, and support
- Experience in training and group facilitation on issues of diversity and inclusion in educational settings, with a strong ability to facilitate and present content to a broad range of faculty, staff, and/or students
- Strong interpersonal skills and experience handling confidential matters with sensitivity and respect
- Experiemce in using digital tools such as Zoom, Microsoft Office Suite (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, SharePoint, Outlook, etc).
Working Environment
- Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding, and manipulating a computer mouse;
- Required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work
- Frequent bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 25 pounds
- Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities which may include and/or are subject to resolution of conflicts
- Ability to clearly communicate to perform essential functions
