Architect Senior
Job Description
Facilities Development and Management, Office of the University Architect, seeks an Architect Sr. to lead teams of hired professionals charged with project design. Develop scope of work statements, Request-for-Qualification statements and make pre-submittal presentations to design consultants. Participate in the negotiation of professional design service contracts, with outside consultants, during the procurement process for projects. Manage and oversee design consultants for projects of varying size, complexity and construction type, and during all phases of projects. Collaborate with others at all levels of the organization to ensure projects align with stated goals. Project types range from standard office renovations to bio-safety level three laboratories.

Essential Duties
Manage projects in accordance with Arizona Board of Regents policies. Coordinate and manage internal and external teams of design professionals during master planning, programming, design and construction efforts of capital projects to ensure they meet the overall goals of the University. During project definition, work with stakeholders to prepare initial project scope, budget, schedule and existing conditions assessments with the assistance of internal resources prior to engaging external design professionals. This may include preparing preliminary reports, sketches, space plans or presentations. Lead the selection process for external design professionals, negotiate fee and prepare contracts ensuring cost will be within Arizona Board of Regents guidelines. Design phase oversight responsibilities include, but are not limited to, budget and schedule confirmation, and monitoring and review of consultant work to ensure that University standards and contractual requirements are met. Attend and represent the University at meetings for compliance with the Arizona Board of Regents and University policies and standards. Communicate project status to stakeholders and key project participants. Review, organize and plan project tasks and schedules.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree in Architecture or related field and five (5) years of architectural experience; OR any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved. Registered as an Architect in the State of Arizona OR NCARB (National Council of Architectural Registration Boards) Certification and become a registered Architect in the State of Arizona within six (6) months after date of hire. Employee must possess a valid US Driver’s license of the appropriate class and required endorsements throughout employment.

Evidence of a Bachelor’s Degree in Architecture or related field
Ten (10) years of architectural experience
Demonstrated proficiency in project and contract management.
Strong organizational, time management, and verbal and written communication skills.
Ability to work independently and within a team environment.

Working Environment
Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding and manipulating a computer mouse; required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work. Frequent bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 25 pounds.
Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities, which may include and/or are subject to resolution of conflicts. Ability to communicate orally in the English language with customers, clients, and the public using a telephone and in-group and face-to-face, one-to-one settings. Drives University vehicle and/or cart to campus site. Ability to clearly communicate verbally, read, write, see and hear to perform essential duties. Regular review of completed tasks. Drive University vehicle.

This position is located at the University Services Building, 1551 S. Rural Road, Tempe, AZ (on Rural Road south of Apache Blvd).
Must possess a valid Arizona driver’s license (minimum of Class D) upon employment and maintain throughout employment. Post-offer of employment, selected candidate must possess an acceptable driving record which is 5 or fewer points in the most recent 39 month period from date of hire.
This position is dependent on the continuation of funding from a specific source other than state appropriations. As such, this appointment may terminate when the funding is no longer available.
