License/Certification Required
The U.S. Federal regulations require DSOs and AROs to hold a U.S. citizenship or permanent residence.
Preferred Qualifications
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS (No Minimum Level Required):
  • Master’s degree preferably in International Education, International/Global Studies, Intercultural Communication, Counseling, Education, Student Personnel Administration, or related field required by the employment start date.
  • Experience working with international students to provide immigration advising, counseling, orientation and programming.
  • Working knowledge of SEVIS, F-1 and J-1 regulations.
  • Ability to problem-solve and manage crises.
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal, intercultural competence.
  • A sophisticated capacity with data management and current information communication technology skills.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills.
  • Attention to detail and the organizational ability to perform multiple tasks simultaneously, time management, and a high degree of professionalism at work.
  • Capacity to learn to operate Terra Dotta’s ISSS software for internal data management.
  • An understanding of student confidentiality issues and academic protocol.
  • Willingness and ability to work some evening and/or weekend events.
  • Demonstrated history of imagination and creativity to find solutions to programmatic challenges and to propose initiatives to move OIED toward its goals and objectives.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The Assistant Director of the International Student & Scholar Services Office (ISSSO) is responsible for the full range of duties associated with supporting international students and scholars. Primary responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Serve as a Designated School Official (DSO) for the F visa program and as an Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO) for the J visa program (the U.S. Federal regulations require AROs to hold U.S. citizenship); and maintain SEVIS accordingly.
  • Advise F and J international students on academic, cultural, financial, and social matters, as well as maintaining legal status in the U.S.; assist them in understanding complex university and immigration policies and procedures through email, and virtual and in-person advising appointments.
  • Maintain a NAFSA membership and keep up to date with changes to F and J regulations, trends, and best practices in the field of International Education.
  • Serve as technical point person for using batching software to generate immigration documents and maintain compliance in SEVIS.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of employment-based visas (H-1B) process and occasionally assist the Director of ISSSO with these filings.
  • Lead the implementation of ISSSO events and support services, including OPT/CPT employment workshops, Social Security trips, and a farewell reception each semester.
  • Oversee outreach programs, including the International Friendship Program and International Education Week Supervise a graduate assistant who supports the unit’s outreach programs.
  • Collaborate with a range of campus partners, such as Campus Safety, Student Employment, Health Services, Advising and Orientation, Student Accounts, Food Services, University Housing, Community-Engaged Leadership, Athletics Office, Admissions, Counseling Center, Career Development Center, Intercultural Student Affairs, academic departments, among others, to increase campus partners’ knowledge of the international population and ensure that the unique needs of international students are met.
  • Serve on campus committees to represent international student and scholar needs and interests.
  • Assist the Director in yearly planning, budget process, and preparation of annual reports and other duties as assigned.
