American International College is a private, coeducational institution of higher education located on a 88+ acre campus in Springfield, Massachusetts. The campus has 42 buildings on two sites approximately 1/2 mile apart with a total of approximately 888,000 gross square feet. Job Description:
Coordinate and implement, providing assistance as needed, all daily operations of the biology and chemistry labs, ensuring that lab preparations are completed prior to each scheduled lab class. This includes the preparation of reagents, materials, and supplies needed for all scheduled lab courses, including the set-up and break down of small equipment, as needed. Ensure that all instrumentation, technology, and scientific equipment is operational. Manage the work of student workers on a weekly basis to ensure laboratory readiness.
Maintain teaching labs and instructional protocols in accordance with departmental and national guidelines with regards to safety. Recommend operational policies and establish procedures to implement safety regulations in line with current policy on biological and chemical handling and disposal, as well as the overall safety of laboratory operations. Provide annual safety training to all lab personnel. Interact closely with the institution’s chemical hygiene officer to ensure and disseminate knowledge of government regulations regarding storage, collection, and disposal of chemical, biological, and hazardous waste. Arrange for semi-annual pick-up of hazardous waste.
Supervise and train student assistants to set up labs, maintain equipment, maintain laboratory cleanliness and order, adherence to safety regulations, and other lab-related tasks. Hire, assign hours to, and approve time work for all student assistants.
Serve as the purchasing coordinator for the science departments, including biology, chemistry, and physics, researching products and pricing, soliciting quotes, placing orders using the campus purchasing software, confirming receipt of and storing laboratory supplies, and maintaining up-to-date records for departmental budget tracking.
Maintain and oversee repair of all laboratory equipment.
Maintain a current inventory of laboratory equipment, supplies, and chemicals; responsibly and legally file all MSDS.
Requirements:
Required Degree(s): Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Chemistry, or related field
Preferred Degree(s): Master’s degree in Biology, Chemistry, or related field
Required Field of Expertise: Biology, Chemistry, or related field
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
Intermediate knowledge, understanding, and skills in area of responsibility, including an understanding of concepts and principles of related areas and functions.
Knowledge of current science laboratory safety procedures, including the safe handling, storage, and disposal of chemical and biological chemicals and materials.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with science faculty and to effectively communicate information to lab instructors in advance of scheduled lab courses.
Ability to manage own time and follow established priorities while providing oversight of work of lab assistant and student workers.
Strong commitment to high-quality instruction in a diverse, student-centered environment and the ability to work with students with various learning styles and backgrounds.
Experience using Microsoft Office Suite, Blackboard, and the instructional use of technology to teach traditional, hybrid or on-line courses, as needed.

Work Schedule
This is a full-time, 10-month (mid-August through mid-June), exempt level, benefit eligible position. Normal office hours are Monday through Friday, 8:30 am – 4:30 pm, flexible to the needs of the department.
