Job Title: Special Education Supervisor and Special Projects Coordinator
Position Summary:
The Special Education Supervisor and Special Projects Coordinator (SESSPC) is responsible for an array of accountabilities. Duties and responsibilities include assisting local education agencies (LEAs) in varying aspects of planning, implementation and supervision of their special education programs. The SESSPS is also accountable for supporting special projects of the Special Education and Pupil Services Division.
Special projects could include refinement or advancement of special education programs, curriculum, and/or professional development. If appropriately certificated, the SESSPC may be called upon to serve as a substitute, building level administrator in the AIU Special Education Schools. This position requires an employee with strong communication skills, interpersonal skills and an understanding of instructional leadership, project management, and special education supervision. The SESSPC supports the operations and priorities of the division, working in collaboration with the other personnel within the division, across the organization, and outside the organization.
Duties and Responsibilities
1. Assist LEAs in ensuring that special education programs are in compliance with federal and state regulatory requirements.
2. Assist LEAs by supporting special education staff with instructional planning that meets the needs of students.
3. Assist LEAs by providing special education staff with coaching, technical support, and/or professional development required of the program.
4. Assist LEAs with supervision of special education staff, providing planned training and assistance when needed.
5. Assis LEAs with coordinating intake IEPs, participating in IEP meetings, and/or acting as the LEA at IEP meetings for students placed outside the systems
6. Assist LEAs with securing related services for special education students as needed.
7. Assist LEAs with securing placements for special education students outside the LEAs when students’ needs cannot otherwise be met by the LEAs.
8. Assist LEAs with coordinating secondary transition planning for special education students in the areas of post-secondary education, work, and independent living.
9. Assist LEAs in managing cyclical or targeted monitorings, corrective actions, and/or the development or implementation of Special Education Plans.
10. Assist LEAs with maintaining accurate and timely submission of special education data.
11. Serves as a substitute, building level administrator for the AIU Special Education Schools, if appropriately certificated and only when needed.
12. Support the advancement or refinement of special projects within the Special Education and Pupil Services Division of the AIU.
13. Other duties as assigned.
1. Pennsylvania Certification in Special Education
2. Minimum of 5 years of experience working in Special Education
3. Master’s Degree in the area of Special Education
4. Pennsylvania Supervisory Certification in Special Education
5. Pennsylvania Principal’s Certification, preferred
6. Significant knowledge, background, and experience with Pennsylvania Special Education Laws and Mandates, Pennsylvania Gifted Education Laws and mandates, and 504 Service Plan Laws and Regulations, as well as federal laws related to special education, preferred
7. PA Driver’s license and reliable transportation required for travel throughout Allegheny County
8. Excellent written and oral communication skills
9. Demonstrated leadership skills
10. Strong organizational skills
11. Ability to build trust and positive working relationships with multiple internal and external stakeholder groups
12. Ability to analyze and resolve complex issues
13. Ability to prioritize tasks, meet deadlines, and work under pressure
14. Ability to comply with AIU policies and procedures
Additional Requirements:
1. Current Act 114, Act 34, Act 151 and NSOR clearances are required prior to an offer (Must be dated within 1 year of hire date).
2. School Personnel Health Record (Form H511.340 (8/2011)) must be completed and received by Human Resources prior to hire date.
