Job Summary:
The Director of Accounting and Financial Reporting oversees and directs day to day operations of the University’s administrative accounting section and oversees all financial reporting responsibilities.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
• Ability to plan and organize the annual year-end closing procedures of the university and to accurately prepare the financial statements of the University.
• Working knowledge of US GAAP.
• Ability to interpret relevant pronouncements issued by Government Accounting Standards Board (GASB), General Accounting Office (GAO) and to implement such pronouncements timely and apply them to the preparation of the University’s financial statements.
• Working knowledge of state and federal regulations regarding revenues, expenditures and reporting requirements for a state educational institution.
• Excellent mathematical skills, attention to detail, and strong organizational and supervisory skills.
• Ability to effectively communicate with all levels of faculty/staff and customers, both internal and external.
• Ability to handle sensitive and difficult situations.
• Must be able to manage multiple projects and adhere to strict deadlines.
Essential Job Functions :
• Develop and supervise employees in the administrative accounting and students financial services departments to ensure maximum efficiency and performance. Answer questions, establish and assist with individual and departmental goals, handle departmental personnel matters, and conduct annual performance evaluations.
• Coordinate activities with the Director of Grants and Contracts to ensure that financial and reporting activities occur as prescribed by generally accepted accounting standards.
• Review monthly reconciliations and journal entries to report accounting information and safeguard assets of the university.
• Prepare/review year-end audit entries, audit schedules and university financial statements in order to accurately report the net assets and financial position of the university in accordance with GAAP, GASB and requirements of the State of Mississippi.
• Evaluate and report unrelated business income activities for federal IRS reporting purposes.
• Work with independent external accounting firm preparing the annual federal Form 990T and provide necessary information for the reporting.
• Prepare and schedule wire transfers and ACH payments.
• Prepare Ad hoc reports and projects as needed by the SVP for Finance, Administrative Services and Operations and Associate Vice President for Finance.
• Preparation/review of various internal and external financial reports.
• Other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
• Master’s degree in Accounting, Business Administration, or related field
• Minimum of seven years accounting experience, including public accounting and/or Higher Education experience.
Licensing and Certifications :
CPA certification preferred, but not required.
