Senior Financial Analyst
Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The mission of the School of Public Health is to improve public health, promote individual well-being and
eliminate health inequities across North Carolina and around the world. Our goal is to achieve these aims through integrated approaches to
teaching, scientific inquiry, and public service that benefit the people of North Carolina, the nation, and the world. The Gillings School of Global Public Health has an annual budget of more than $150 million, 240 faculty, over 300
staff, and over 2,000 students and is located in over 300,000 gross square feet of space both on and off campus. The School has a
significant research mission that includes $180 million of research awards and a separately incorporated foundation that has approximately
~$89 million of net assets. The School has seven academic departments, one other academic unit, a School-wide institute and center and
multiple other units. The School and its senior leadership are supported by a central finance office.
The School’s central finance office has general overall responsibility for financial oversight of the School
and its units that includes a complex system of state, overhead, grants, trust and foundation accounts. In addition, it provides direct
financial management of the School’s central budget (~$23 million of state, overhead, trusts and some grant funds) and the Public
Health Foundation, Inc. The Public Health Foundation, Inc is a separate legal and financial entity that has approximately $89 million of net
assets and requires separate financial auditing and reporting to various entities.
Position Summary The Senior Financial Analyst provides advanced budget/financial modeling and budget/financial analysis for
the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health. The position 1) conducts sophisticated budget & financial modeling, 2)
generates detailed analyses of financial operations and budget/financial outlook of the School financials, and 3) applies financial analyses
to guide budget strategy and decision-making and 4) creates budget/financial dashboards using Tableau. This position must operate with a
high level of autonomy and is expected to generate complex budget and financial analyses and budget models for all levels of the Gillings
school (school-level, department-level, central administrative units, etc.). The position will work closely with and report to the Associate
Dean for Finance and Business to develop budget and financial strategies for the school.
Minimum Education and
Experience Requirements Mid- to late-career with Masters and 2- 4 yrs experience; Bachelors and 3-5
yrs experience
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience Ability
to understand relationships between numbers, trends, and work with graphical information to interpret budget, financial and operational
data, prepare budget and other financial information that evaluates business performance and advises strategic business decisions. Must have
an operational understanding, including the potential impact of business and budget decisions on various situations with the ability to
generate new ideas and creative solutions. Strong computer skills and knowledge of Excel, Word, and
database applications, excellent written and verbal communication skills and an attention to detail and ability to successfully manage
multiple tasks, while keeping big picture in sight.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Minimum of 4 years budget/financial modeling and reporting experience, preferably in a higher education or
nonprofit environment, including experience creating dashboards. Demonstrated analytical skills including ability to analyze large volumes
of data, solve problems, find efficient way to complete tasks, and make decisions.
