Office of Research
Position Overview
This position reports to the Research Integrity
director in the Office of Research and works closely with the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC), Institutional Official,
Animal Care Unit, and staff of the Office of Research to provide administrative and programmatic support for the KU animal care and use
program. This is a key position working to ensure that animal research and teaching at the university is conducted ethically and in
accordance with federal regulations and university policies.
The IACUC is responsible for assuring compliance with federal
regulations, accreditation standards, and university policy and procedures surrounding the use of animals in research. As mandated by
federal regulations, the IACUC is the institutional authority in approving animal research protocols.
The IACUC Administrator
provides leadership to research community regarding animal care and use in research and teaching; manages all aspects of IACUC workflow to
ensure timely processing, excellent customer service, and complete documentation; contributes to and implements plans for continuous
improvement, which may include policy review and implementation, process improvement initiatives, development of training and outreach
materials, or preparing quantitative and qualitative reports. Coordinates preparations for accreditation site visits and drafts regulatory
reports for the Institutional Official’s signature. Analyzes complex and/or sensitive issues in the context of relevant regulations,
policies and procedures, and drafts correspondence and executive summaries to aid in institutional responses. Supervises IACUC
administrative staff.
This position requires knowledge of the complex federal regulations and guidelines concerning programs;
detailed knowledge of the KU program, policies and procedures; ability to make independent, knowledgeable, and immediate responses to
queries from the animal care and use and research communities; ability to accurately track and report various compliance issues; ability to
develop informational tools and materials with little supervision. This position requires strong organizational and computer skills,
excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and attention to detail. The coordinator interacts with IACUC members, veterinary staff,
animal care unit staff, researchers, research administrators, and other university administrative offices.
