Position Description:
POSITION SUMMARY
This faculty position is a full-time, 100% FTE (11 Months, July – May) Tenure Track position as General Counselor in the Division of Counseling located at San Jose City College.
Assignment may include day and evening responsibilities. Some workdays may be assigned outside the eleven-month academic calendar.
This position is represented by the San Jose/Evergreen Federation of Teachers, AFT 6157.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The Counseling Program at San Jose City College helps students identify their strengths and achieve their potential. The counseling staff is available to assist students in planning an academic program to meet the requirements of their goal for certificates, graduation, transfer to 4-year institutions, and/or support personal interest. Counselors will be required to assist students define their educational objectives and plan how to achieve those objectives, and provide assessments to help define those goals is available. Counselors are available to assist students by appointment or during specific drop-in hours. All counselors must provide academic, vocational, transfer, career and personal guidance and counseling for student population that is diverse in terms of race and ethnicity, ability/disability, disadvantage, linguistic background, and culture. Counselors must be knowledgeable of current academic and vocational program requirements. Counselors must demonstrate commitment to academic and professional excellence; possess excellent interpersonal and organizational skills.
1. Provide academic, vocational, career and personal guidance and counseling for prospective, new, returning and continuing students. Work with students to develop abbreviated and comprehensive educational plans to meet Student Success initiatives and mandates.
2. Efficiently and effectively work with students during drop-in counseling, including in-person, online, telephone and through email requests.
3. Participate in outreach functions that may include serving as a liaison with high schools, mentors, community-based organizations and four-year colleges/universities.
4. Support the coordination of counseling components such as probation/dismissal, orientation, outreach, online counseling, online orientation, early alert, student cohorts, retention, other/etc. for meeting Student Equity & Achievement Program and College’s Student Success Goals.
5. Provide support to Guided Pathways and other College Student Success initiatives, planning, and implementation.
6. Act as liaison counselor to one or more academic disciplines/departments.
7. Participate in the implementation of the District-wide Student Success Plan including admission, placement, and orientation, counseling, and follow-up components.
8. Participate with high schools and transfer institutions in the articulation and recruitment process.
9. Utilize the district’s computerized course prerequisite system, education planning, database for storing petitions. College Source/TES, SARS appointment and note taking system, and other computerized systems for rendering counseling services.
10. Participate in Student Learning Outcomes (SLO) of Guidance courses. Service Area Outcomes (SAO) and assessment activities.
11. Participate in the development of yearly Program Review reports.
12. Use best practices and resources appropriate to counseling and instruction.
13. Collaborate and support other Student Affairs entities to assist students with the matriculation process, outreach efforts, and counseling related initiatives and programming.
14. Use appropriate preparation and organizational skills in area of assignment.
15. Teach courses in assigned discipline by communicating subject matter clearly and effectively.
16. Adapt methodologies for students with special needs and different learning styles.
17. Demonstrate commitment to professional development, including but not limited to activities such as: participation in professional conferences, workshops, seminars, membership in professional organizations, research projects, publishing academic work, participation in statewide committees or organizations, etc.
18. Demonstrate sensitivity in working with students and staff of diverse racial, ethnic, academic and socio economic backgrounds, sexual orientation, and disabilities by showing respect for differences and the dignity of others.
19. Participate in faculty responsibilities such as: course and curriculum development and review, student learning outcomes and assessment, program review, committees, research and special projects as needed in the discipline/department or district.
20. Attend and participate in department, division and college meetings and keep posted office hours.
21. Meet record keeping obligations on time, e.g. grades, census, reports, rosters, textbook orders, and requisitions.
22. Maintain and provide current course syllabi as required by California Education Code and Board policy.
23. Foster a professional work and learning environment.
24. Perform other duties as required by the Collective Bargaining Agreement.
Required Qualifications:
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
1. Master’s in Counseling, Rehabilitation Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Counseling Psychology, Guidance Counseling, Educational Counseling, Social Work, Career Development, Marriage and Family Therapy or Marriage, Family and Child Counseling
(NOTE: A bachelor’s degree in one of the listed degrees and a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) is an alternative qualification for this discipline).OR

Salary Range:
$98,200 to $134,801 Entry Level Annual Salary (11 Month, Academic Salary Schedule 20234-2024); Maximum Salary Potential $174,901. Note: Actual Salary placement is based on candidate’s verified education and experience.
