Mission Statement
Michigan Medicine improves the health of patients, populations and communities through excellence in education, patient care, community service, research and technology development, and through leadership activities in Michigan, nationally and internationally. Our mission is guided by our Strategic Principles and has three critical components; patient care, education and research that together enhance our contribution to society.
Who We Are
Launched in 2018 as a presidential initiative to support research and clinical translational efforts in precision health, Precision Health (PH) engages faculty across the campus in precision health-related discovery, translation, and implementation research activities. Built upon a prior investment in genetic data through the long-standing Michigan Genomics Initiative (MGI), the early focus of PH activities included 1) expanding access for UM researchers across campus to Michigan Medicine (MM) de-identified (or scrubbed) data sets using MM health records, 2) establishing HIPPA-compliant secure compute resources, and 3) expanding the linked data to include social determinants of health and medical images while continuing to grow the genetic dataset through active consent and recruit effort within MM. Now with rapid advances in both predictive and generative artificial intelligence (AI), the PH initiative will focus resources on safe and equitable clinical translation of these new methods that include processes for building, exploring and implementing predictive models into the clinical environment, monitoring deployed models in partnership with health system operations and enabling further AI/ML health research.
