Position Summary
The Office of Student Writing and Learning’s mission is to engage students in their learning process, to improve their self-efficacy for writing and learning, and to help them become more effective communicators. We believe learning is a life-long process and that skills acquired and honed while students at The Chicago School will enhance their academic, professional, and personal lives. The Dissertation Writing Specialist will support this mission by providing dissertation writing support services for students enrolled in doctoral programs, including group and individual learning opportunities to assist students in honing their academic and research writing skills. Writing Specialists report to the Associate Director of The National Center for Teaching and Learning.
Principal Duties
Provide one-on-one and small group coaching tutoring for doctoral students, including, but not limited to, asynchronous chapter, reviews, real-time virtual consultations, conversation Partner Program to strengthen students’ oral communication skills, writing groups and workshops, timely completion of goals and milestones
Utilize online scheduling software to maintain a weekly schedule of activity
Provide group instruction, including group tutorials and webinars
Collaborate with university faculty and OSWL staff to create user-friendly online content for dissertation writing development
Collaborate with university faculty to identify discipline-specific writing and academic support needs for their students
Additional Responsibilities
Maintain and communicate records of student progress, including challenges and successes
Maintain strict confidentiality with regard to student names and results
Behave in a collegial and professional manner with all members of The Chicago School community and adhere to the highest professional conduct and ethical standards
Attend regularly scheduled staff meetings, department meetings, and other development and collaborative events as needed/assigned
Other duties as assigned
Position Qualifications
A doctoral degree, preferably in English, writing, rhetoric, writing center studies, or similar, and/or psychology or psychology-related area
Minimum of 2 years of curricular or co-curricular instructional experience in a higher education setting
Experience working on virtual teams preferred
Strong familiarity with APA writing style and formatting
Demonstrated excellence in teaching college-level academic and/or professional writing skills to a culturally diverse student population
Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills
