The Research Nurse Practitioner (NP) uses their research-specific clinical knowledge to offer individualized guidance to patients, families and caregivers to foster independence during their complex research protocol. Using the nursing process and the research protocol, a Research NP assesses patient needs and provides education and resources to facilitate appropriate and timely quality health and psychosocial care throughout all phases of the protocol. The Research NP creates an environment of care that is patient-centered and compassionate, inspiring and motivating.
The Research NP serves as integral members of a multidisciplinary team to provide routine and specialized research procedures and services to Harvard-affiliated research investigators. The Research NP has the credentials to function in an expanded nursing role and is responsible for the daily management of selected patients. The practitioner has responsibility for assessment and management of patients including diagnostic and therapeutic interventions, and continuous implementation and evaluation of an appropriate plan of care. The Research NP works under the supervision of the attending physician.
1. Under the supervision and direction of the responsible physician, provides research procedures to study participants in various hospital outpatient clinics and inpatient settings, as assigned and across a continuum of age and acuity. The staff member must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care, counseling, and teaching to a select patient population served on his/her assigned unit.
2. Performs complete and accurate health histories and physicals whenever necessary. May perform medical histories and physical exams as a member of the study team for an IRB approved research protocol.
3. Orders, interprets, and evaluates appropriate lab and diagnostic tests to assess patients’ health care needs. Orders medications and writes prescriptions according to research protocols.
4. Manages care and treatment of study participants as indicated in the professional scope of practice and within current standards of medical practice protocols.
5. Maintains accurate documentation of patient history, physical exams, treatment, and progress in medical records.
6. Exercises autonomy in decision-making by using sophisticated clinical knowledge to demonstrate a high level of accountability to supervising physician, research investigators, other staff, and research participant.
7. Appropriately responds to emergency situations within the scope of practice and implements urgent staff consultation and/or activation of BWH code system.
8. Collaborates with multiple disciplines in the development and implementation of protocol procedures to provide optimal patient care. Performs diagnostic, therapeutic, or other procedures as outlined in research protocol.
9. Provides follow-up to research investigators/acts as liaison between the research center staff and the study investigators to address patient problems and responses to treatment.
10. Facilitates communication between various health team services and the study participant.
11. Delivers expert clinical care through evidenced-based practice partnerships with research participants, families and colleagues.

Work areas will include the Center for Clinical Investigation discrete inpatient and outpatient units, BWH hospital clinics, and various inpatient units, including but not limited to the Neuro ICU, Surgical ICU, and the Cancer Center.
Job responsibilities will require significant amounts of standing, moving between rooms and floors, and communicating verbally and in writing with colleagues, patients, and family members. Patient care responsibilities will require standard precautions, and in some cases additional precautions as necessary.
